Baritone Andrè Schuen comes from the Ladin area of La Val of South Tyrol in Italy and grew up speaking three languages (Ladin, Italian and German), a versatility reflected in his current vocal repertoire. Although the cello was his chosen instrument for many years, he decided to attend the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, studying singing under Professor Horiana Branisteanu, and song and oratorio under Professor Wolfgang Holzmair. Andrè Schuen rounded off his education attending master classes held by Kurt Widmer, Sir Thomas Allen, Kammersängerin Brigitte Fassbaender, Romualdo Savastano and Olaf Bär. He graduated from the Mozarteum in 2010 with distinction.

Andrè Schuen starts and also ends the 2018/2019 season with Schubert lied recitals, the Schöne Müllerin and Schwanengesang, at one of the most important lied places worldwide, the Schubertiade in Austria where he has already been highly acclaimed. Further recitals take him to Schubertiade Vilabertran, Munich, Philharmonie de Paris and Madrid. On the opera stage he is featuring Papageno at New National Theatre Opera in Tokio in September. In May he makes his debut as Olivier in a new production by Christof Loy in Strauss’ Capriccio at the Teatro Real in Madrid. With the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra he goes on an Asian tour with concerts in Shanghai and Seoul singing in his prime role as Don Giovanni.

On the concert stage Andrè Schuen can be heard this season with Boston Symphony Orchestra and Andris Nelsons in Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, followed by the same repertory with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and Philippe Jordan: A tour with the Orchestre des Champs-Elysées and Philippe Herreweghe takes him a. o. to Brussels, Poitiers and Essen.

Andrè Schuen has performed in Salzburg since 2010, first as a member of the Young Singers Project and subsequently in various productions at the Salzburg Festival conducted by Simon Rattle and Riccardo Muti. From 2010 to 2014 he was a member of the ensemble at the opera house in Graz. Andrè Schuen was one of the few singers to appear in three roles at the same time: as Figaro, Don Giovanni and Guglielmo in Nikolaus Harnoncourt’s Da Ponte Cycle at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. His performances led to him winning the Austrian Music & Theatre Prize. Andrè Schuen continues to have a close association with the Theater an der Wien, where he has enthralled audiences and critics alike for his interpretation of the title role in Giovanni Paisiello’s The Barber of Seville under René Jacobs or again in the title role in the world premiere of Anno Schreier’s Hamlet directed by Christoph Loy. This was followed by further role debut roles as Marcello in La bohème in Geneva and as Count Almaviva in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro in Angers and Nantes. Last season he sang as Don Giovanni at the Opéra National de Lorraine in Nancy and the Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg.

With the pianist Daniel Heide Andrè Schuen has sung recitals in London’s Wigmore Hall, in Oxford, at the Heidelberger Frühling or in Vienna’s Konzerthaus. Gerold Huber is also one of his recital partners, with whom he made his debut at the Schubertiade in Hohenems. In 2017 Andrè Schuen celebrated his North American debut at the renowned Tanglewood Festival, as well as at the Aspen Music Festival in a Schubert recital together with Andreas Haefliger.

Andrè Schuen’s latest lied CD titled „Wanderer“ accompanied by pianist Daniel Heide is dedicated to Robert Schumann. His first recital disc with songs by Schumann, Wolf and Martin was highly acclaimed by the press and the public.
