Festival

Beethovenfest Bonn 2019

‘Moonlight’: thus the motto of the 2019 Beethovenfest. What looks at first like a wry allusion to the ‘Moonlight Sonata’ turns out to be fruitful terrain for this year’s programme.

Programme
Ludwig van Beethoven: Seven variations for cello and piano on "Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen", WoO 46
Johannes Brahms: Cello Sonata no. 1 in E minor for Cello and Piano, Op.38
Anton Webern: Two Pieces for cello and piano (1899)
Anton Webern: Three Little Pieces for cello and piano, op. 11 (1914)
Anton Webern: Cello Sonata (1914)
Ludwig van Beethoven: Cello Sonata no. 3 in A major, Op.69
Overview

Elector Maximilian Franz hailed from Vienna and was an ardent admirer of Mozart. The young Beethoven, being a member of his court orchestra, was thus well-versed in Mozart’s music. He composed the variations on the aria ‘Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen’ from ‘The Magic Flute’ as early as 1801. While working on his Fifth and Sixth Symphonies he also wrote the Cello Sonata in A major (op. 69). Johannes Brahms was so impressed with its opening that he adopted the same idea for his own Cello Sonata in E minor (op. 38). Anton Webern took up another facet of Beethoven’s art – expressive small-scale form – and compressed it even further in his ‘Three Little Pieces’ (op. 11) and the Cello Sonata of 1914, a work left unpublished during his lifetime.
