Tradition and innovation converge in a spellbinding evening of contemporary masterworks.In a landmark concert, the Hebrides Ensemble revives its first-ever commission, John Bevan Baker’s Eclogue, originally penned in 1994, whose graceful melodies evoke the rolling seascapes of the islands. This is followed by two captivating chamber works by Judith Weir, each blending the rhythmic vitality of Scottish traditional tunes with unexpected harmonic twists. The programme then shifts to Thea Musgrave’s Night Windows, a soundworld of contrasting shadows and light inspired by an Edward Hopper painting, where silences speak as loudly as notes. Finally, Stuart MacRae’s I am Prometheus unfolds, a modern portrait of the tragic Greek hero rendered in arresting instrumental colour and dramatic pacing. Together, these four works form a rich tapestry of Scotland’s thriving musical culture—where heritage and bold experimentation resonate in perfect harmony.
