Encounter the gripping tension of Stuart MacRae’s Parable, where Wilfred Owen’s wartime retelling of Abraham and Isaac illuminates sacrifice and resolve on the First World War centenary. The programme also features Thea Musgrave’s youthful Parisian gem from the 1950s and Judith Weir’s evocative song cycle Nuits d’Afrique, conceived as a modern companion to Ravel’s Chansons madécasses.To mark the centenary of the First World War, the Hebrides Ensemble presents Stuart MacRae’s Parable—a chamber work that reframes the Old Testament tale of Abraham and Isaac through the raw lyricism of Wilfred Owen. Against a stark musical landscape, two singers embody an agonising confrontation of faith and paternal duty, their voices entwined in piercing drama and a harrowing finale. The programme opens with an early masterpiece by Thea Musgrave from her student years in 1950s Paris, where elegant themes and vibrant winds reveal a composer in bloom. It concludes with Judith Weir’s 2015 song cycle Nuits d’Afrique, whose rich textures and rhythmic echoes offer a fresh dialogue with Ravel’s Chansons madécasses, weaving a tapestry of sacrifice, memory and storytelling that resonates through centuries.
