About
Wieke Karsten is a principal subject teacher in flute at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. Until September 2012 she was also a teacher at the Prince Claus Conservatory in Groningen.
She studied in England with the famous flute teacher Trevor Wye and in The Hague with Rien de Reede and Thies Roorda.
Wieke is an expert in the field of "Music, study and the brain", about which she has developed a special method. She gives lectures, workshops and courses in the Netherlands and abroad. She also guides individual students and professional musicians with questions about studying, performing and preparing auditions.
Since 2009 she teaches at the Dutch Flute Academy alongside Emily Beynon and Jeroen Bron. This academy focuses on young Dutch talents from 14 to 18 years and (inter) national students. The Neflac organizes a Summer Academy and teaching days throughout the year.
Since 2002, Wieke has been writing columns about making music for the magazine Flute of the Dutch Flute Society. These columns also appear in the Flöte Aktuell magazine of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Flöte and the ARCO magazine of the Dutch ESTA. View a number of these columns.
With pianist Henry Kelder she forms the Duo Karsten-Kelder. Together they won the Eighth International Flute Competition Friedrich Kuhlau in Germany in November 1998.
As Duo Karsten-Kelder they have made 2 CDs to date: Doodles in Flight and Histoires.
She regularly plays in various ensembles and orchestras such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Dutch Ensemble. She is a regular classical flautist for music publisher De Haske - Hal Leonard.
Wieke is often asked as a jury member at competitions such as the Princess Christina Competition and the National Flute Competition.
With Berdien Stenberg she organized summer courses for flute students between 10 and 20 years old between 1996 and 2000.
Wieke is a board member of the Dutch Flute Society.
