Walk off the Earth (from English - “Leave the Earth”) is a Canadian indie rock band formed in Burlington, Ontario.
Story
Gotye’s video on their cover version of the song “Somebody That I Used to Know”, which at the beginning of 2012 gained more than 47 million views in 29 days, brought popularity to the group. In the video, five people play on one acoustic guitar, because at that time they had no other instruments at hand.
On Saturday, January 7, 2012, actor Russell Crowe, after watching the video, tweeted them. Alyssa Milano and Troyan Bellisario became fans of Walk off the Earth when Troyan added a video to her page on Tumblr on January 20, 2012. Ellen Degeneres called the group to her show on January 23, 2012, where they played live, again on the same guitar, despite the colds of member Gianni. After the video was shot, the group received positive reviews from Gotye.
Also, the group quailed “Someone Like You” by singer Adele, “Party Rock Anthem” by LMFAO, Yesterday by The Beatles and some others.
In February 2012, the group signed a contract with Columbia Records.
The group also maintains its own YouTube channel, where it uploads clips to their compositions.
On December 29, 2018, the group announced the death of keyboardist Mike Taylor. According to them, he died peacefully in a dream at home.
Style
The style of the group can be called indie rock with a stretch. In their recordings (regardless of whether it is a cover or their own composition), WOTE uses instruments such as kazu, ukulele, banjo, accordion. Each member of the group is a multi-instrumentalist.
