Australian/Italian tenor Virgilio Marino was winner of the Tenor Award at the Sydney Performing Arts Challenge, a Dame Joan Sutherland Award, and was a finalist in both the prestigious McDonald’s Opera Competition and the Australian National Eisteddfod in Canberra.
Virgilio studied voice at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the Mannes College of Music in New York. While in New York, his operatic performances included Fenton (Falstaff), Prunier (La Rondine), and covering Alfredo (La Traviata). He has worked with voice coaches including Renata Scotto, Regina Resnik, Ruth Falcon, Tony Manoli and Joe Colaneri and completed masterclasses with Richard Miller, Jon Vickers, Fedora Barbieri and Jay Lessinger. 2003 took him to Italy for further studies in the Belcanto repertoire where he performed Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle in Milan and was a Semi-Finalist in the Concorso Riccardo Zandonai, Riva, Italy.
Virgilio made his professional debut at Theater Regensburg in Germany, performing the roles of Il Duca di Mantua (Rigoletto) and the title role (Oberon), and covering Oronte (Alcina).
After moving back to Australia in 2006, Virgilio joined Opera Queensland where his roles have since included Ramiro (Cinderella), Rodolfo (La Bohème), Nemorino (L’elisir d’amore), Ferrando (Cosi fan Tutte), the Duke and Borsa (Rigoletto), Jaquino (Fidelio), Roderigo (Otello), Malcolm (Macbeth), Spoletta (Tosca), Gastone (La Traviata), Monostatos and First Armed Man (The Magic Flute), Pong (Turandot), Harry (La Fanciulla del West) and Njegus (The Merry Widow).
Other engagements have included soloist in Spirit of Christmas at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre; the role of Shepherd (Oedipus Rex) for New Zealand Festival; the Myer Music Bowl Verdi concert, La fanciulla del West, Beethoven’s Symphony No 9, Enescu’s Vox Maris and Verdi’s Requiem with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra; the roles of Jaquino and Harry for State Opera of South Australia; Mozart’s Requiem with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra; Don Curzio (The Marriage of Figaro) and Gastone (La Traviata) for the Brisbane Festival; Verdi’s Requiem for Sydney Philharmonia and Howard Boucher (Dead Man Walking) in Sydney.
More recently, Virgilio travelled to Tokyo to sing Ferrando in a new production of Cosi fan tutte presented by the International Foundation for Arts and Culture in collaboration with Opera Australia and performed Narciso in Il turco in Italia for Opera Australia in Melbourne. He returned to Opera Queensland to perform Borsa and Rodolfo, and covered the role of Ernesto in Don Pasquale for Opera Australia.
Upcoming engagements will include Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni for State Opera of South Australia and Alfredo in Die Fledermaus for Opera Queensland. Virgilio also travelled to Berlin in 2015 to work with assistant conductor Klaus Sallmann from the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin.
