Born into a family with a great musical tradition, Vicenç Esteve began his studies of musical theory and piano in Barcelona at a very young age, and sang with Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu high voices choir. At 16 he began his singing studies with his father, baritone Vicenç Esteve. He debuted as a tenor in the leading role in the zarzuela “La Dolorosa.” In 1993 starred in the leading role of the opera “Marina” and began singing zarzuela and opera in the most important theaters and concert halls throughout Spain.
He has received awards in international singing competitions such as: Francisco Alonso, Jaume Aragall, Eugenio Marco, Operalia, Ciudad de Logroño, and Vall d’Uixó. In 2003, he received the Gerard Arnhold Bursary Award for young singers at the Wexford Opera Festival (Ireland) for his performance in “L’elisir d’amore.”
He has performed at Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu, Palau de la Música Catalana, Òpera a Catalunya, Òpera de Cambra de Catalunya, Perelada Festival, Oviedo’s Opera Festival, Malaga, Granada, Menorca, Tenerife, Palma de Mallorca’s Teatro Principal, Seville’s Teatro de la Maestranza, and Madrid’s Teatro de la Zarzuela, among others.
In 1998, Plácido Domingo invited him to perform the role of Nemorino in “L’elisir d’amore” at the Washington Opera. Outside Spain, he has also performed “La Bohème” and “Madame Butterfly” in France and Belgium with the French opera company En plein air; “Doña Francisquita” at Toulouse’s Théâtre du Capitole; “El Retablo de Maese Pedro” at the Teatro Verdi de Sassari in Italy and the Comunale de Bolonia; and “La Scala di seta” at Lugo’s Teatro Rossini and the Teatro de Città di Castello.
He has performed with great opera artists such as Josep Carreras, Jaume Aragall, Plácido Domingo, Joan Pons and Vicente Sardinero, among others. He has starred in many zarzuelas, including “Cançó d’amor i de guerra” with V. Sardinero; “Doña Francisquita” conducted by J. Tamayo; “Luisa Fernanda,” and operas such as “Rita,” “L’elisir d’amore,” “Don Pasquale,” “La Traviata,” “Falstaff,” “La Bohème,” “Così fan tutte,” and “The Barber of Seville.”
During the 1998-1999 season, he debuted at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in the operas “Salomé,” “Parsifal” and “La Flauta Mágica,” conducted by the Comediants. He also performed the role of Pong in “Turandot” for the Liceu’s re-inauguration, conducted by Núria Espert, and “Sly” with Josep Carreras.
During the 2005-06 season, he performed in “Otello,” “Maria del Carmen” and “Lohengrin” at the Gran Teatre del Liceu; “Don Gregorio” and “L’heure spagnole” at the Wexford Opera Festival; as Tybalt in “Romeo and Juliet” by Gounod at Seville’s Teatro de la Maestranza; and Tomillo in “La Bruja” at Valencia’s Palau de les Arts. In 2007 he performed in “Carmen” alongside Carlos Álvarez, conducted by Carlos Saura, at Valencia’s Palau de les Arts; a revival of “Don Gregorio” at the Teatro della Fortuna de Fano (Italy); “Le Nozze di Figaro” at Valencia’s Palau de les Arts; and “La Bruja” at Pamplona’s Teatro Baluarte.
In 2008, he performed again in “Turandot” at the Palau de les Arts, directed by the Chinese filmmaker Chen Kaige and conducted by Zubin Mehta. He also participated in “Parsifal” at the Gala Puccini under the conduction of Plácido Domingo and “Orfeo” in Palma de Mallorca for the mise en scène of the La Fura dels Baus, as well as starring in “La Bruja” in Andratx.
From 2009 to 2012, his performances include “El Rey que rabió” (Jeremías), directed by Emilio Sagi, and “Turandot,” conducted by Lorin Maazel, both in the Palau de les Arts; “Madama Butterfly” (Goro) at Gijón’s Teatro Jovellanos,; “Turandot”, again at Liceu directed by Nuria Espert; “El Superbarbero de Sevilla” by the Tricicle Company for the Gran Teatre del Liceu, which he has performed throughout Spain since 2003; “Prodana Nevesta” and “Carmen” at Palau de les Arts; “Il Trovatore” at the Liceu; “Carmen” at Pamplona’s Auditorio Baluarte;“ L’heure spagnole” at the Teatro delle Muse in Ancona, Italy; “Turandot” in Guangzhou, China, again under the conduction of Maestro Maazel; “Susannah” at Bilbao’s Palacio Euskalduna; “L’heure spagnole” at the Frankfurt Opera; “Parsifal” at the Teatre del Liceu; the world premiere of the opera “Yo, Dalí” at Madrid’s Teatro de la Zarzuela and the Gran Teatre del Liceu; “La Flauta Mágica” at the Gran Teatre del Liceu; “Tosca” at the Auditorio Baluarte, where he also performed “Die Zauberflöte;” and “Ariadne auf Naxos” at Palau de les Arts.
He recently performed in “Madame Butterfly” at Pamplona’s Auditorio Baluarte; “Turandot” in Oviedo; and “Tosca,” “Carmen” and “Turandot” at Palacio Euskalduna. His upcoming projects include “Il Tabarro” at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, “Andrea Chénier” at the Festival Castell de Peralada, “Luisa Fernanda” at Valencia’s Palau de les Arts, and “Otello” at Oviedo’s Teatro Campoamor and Bilbao’s Palacio Euskalduna.
