Vasilisa Berzhanskaya is a Russian operatic mezzo-soprano. Her repertoire encompasses roles of the Italian bel canto of Rossini and Bellini, Mozart, Baroque music such as Vivaldi and Purcell, and roles from Russian opera, by composers such as Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky. Though Berzhanskaya is a mezzo-soprano, in the past she has sung roles ranging from dramatic coloratura soprano (the Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte) to contralto (Isabella in L'italiana in Algeri). As such, she has been described as possessing "a huge vocal range in which she display impeccable coloratura."
Vasilisa Berzhanskaya graduated from the Russian Gnessin Musical Academy. In 2016, she studied at the Rossini Academy in Pesaro under the supervision of Alberto Zedda. In 2014–2015, she was a soloist with the Primorsky Opera and Ballet Theatre in Vladivostok. In 2015–2017, she participated in the Young Artists Opera Program of the Bolshoi Theatre. In 2016, she made her debut at the Bolshoi Theatre. Since 2017, she has been a soloist with the German Opera in Berlin. Since 2019, she has also been a soloist of the Novosibirsk Opera (NOVAT). She appeared at the Rossini Festival in Pesaro, Salzburg Festival, at the Basel Theatre, Dutch National Opera, Concertgebouw, Roma Opera, Verona Philharmonic Theatre, Florence Opera Theatre and at the International House of Music in Moscow.
The singer’s repertoire includes Marchesa Melibea in Il viaggio a Reims, Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Angelina in La Cenerentola, and the title role in Giovanna d’Arco by Rossini, Siebel in Gounod’s Faust, Fenena in Verdi’s Nabucco, Maddalena in Verdi’s Rigoletto, Olga in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, Vagaus in Vivaldi’s Juditha triumphans, Aristaea in Vivaldi’s L’Olimpiade, Diane in Offenbach’s Orphée aux Enfers, Romeo in Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi, Dido in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, Lel in Rimski-Korsakov’s Snow Maiden, and Despina in Mozart’s Così fan tutte. Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Roma Opera and Rigoletto at the Mario Del Monaco Theatre in Treviso featuring Vasilisa Berzhanskaya were recorded and broadcasted.
Vasilisa Berzhanskaya cooperated with Alberto Zedda, Daniele Gatti, Donald Runnicles, Mariss Jansons, Dmitry Jurowski, Vladimir Jurowski, Andrea Marcon, Enrique Mazzola, Giampaolo Bisanti, Alexander Vedernikov, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Dmitry Korchak, Stefano Montanari, Philipp Chizhevsky, Fabio Mastrangelo, Giacomo Sagripanti, Felix Korobov, Gintaras Rinkevičius, and other conductors, as well as with Barrie Kosky, Mario Martone, Damiano Michieletto, Stefano Vizioli, Dmitry Belyanushkin, Kirill Serebrennikov, Emma Dante, Robert Carsen, Vyacheslav Starodubtsev, Katharina Thalbach, and other directors.
