Festival

Beethovenfest Bonn 2019

‘Moonlight’: thus the motto of the 2019 Beethovenfest. What looks at first like a wry allusion to the ‘Moonlight Sonata’ turns out to be fruitful terrain for this year’s programme.

Programme
Giselher Klebe: ‘Sonata for Horn and Piano, op. 95 Alteration of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Sonata op. 27, no. 2)’ (1985/86)
Francis Poulenc: Histoire de Babar, le petit éléphant
Camille Saint-Saëns: Carnival of the Animals
Hector Berlioz: ‘Les nuits d‘été’, song cycle for mezzo-soprano and orchestra, op. 7 (1856)
Overview

Beethoven, aware that his Piano Sonata in C-sharp minor had an unusual form, gave it the subtitle ’quasi una Fantasia’.

But it was only after his death that the Berlin music critic Ludwig Rellstab christened it the ‘Moonlight’ Sonata, making it the ne plus ultra of romantic music. In 1985-86 Giselher Klebe gave it modern garb by entrusting the melody to that most romantic of instruments, the French horn. No less romantic is Hector Berlioz’s song cycle ‘Les nuits d‘été’, which founded the genre of the orchestral song. Enigmatic, yearning and dark-hued, here the vocal part is embedded in the luxuriant sound of the orchestra.
