About

Ulrich Aloysius Konrad is a musicologist and professor at the Institute of Music Research of the University of Würzburg. He is considered an expert on European music of the 17th to 20th centuries, especially the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Robert Schumann, Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. He is chairman of the Mozarteum Mozarteum Academy of Mozart Research in Salzburg, project leader of the Robert Schumann Complete Edition and the edition "Richard Wagner Schriften (RWS)".

Career
Ulrich Konrad studied musicology, German studies and history at the Universities of Bonn and Vienna. His doctoral thesis in 1983 dealt with the composer and conductor Otto Nicolai, who influenced the composition and performance practice of the orchestra in the mid-19th century with the founding of the Vienna Philharmonic. After his habilitation in 1991 at the University of Göttingen with a study of Mozart's creative work, he taught from 1993 as a professor at the State University of Music in Freiburg im Breisgau musicology and 1996 Ordinarius of Musicology at the University of Würzburg.

Services
Ulrich Konrad dealt intensively with the work sketches and fragments of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and was able to draw conclusions about Mozart's composition. It has become apparent, among other things, that Mozart has planned his compositions far more thoroughly and developed them in several stages than previously assumed. He published these insights in a monograph in 1991 and also presented annotated editions of all the sketches and fragments of Mozart.

In addition, he deals with organ tablature of the 15th to 17th centuries, with instrumental ensemble music of the 17th century as well as with the history and methodology of musicology.

Honors
Konrad was awarded the Dent Medal in 1996. In January 1999, he received the silver Mozart medal of the International Mozarteum Foundation Salzburg for his standard work on Mozart's creation and his complete edition of Mozart's sketches. Konrad was the first and so far only musicologist in 2001 to receive the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize. Konrad is a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, the Leopoldina [and the Academia Europaea and corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen and the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz. In 2017 he received the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
