Ulf Dirk Mädler received voice training at a young age as a result of being a long term member of the Jenaer Philharmonic boys choir. In 1991 he entered the “Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst ‘Mozarteum’ in Salzburg“ as a voice performance major and graduated in 1998. His voice instructors were Professor Karl Christian Kohn and Professor Boris Bakow. Upon completion of his studies, the Mozarteum afforded him 3 years of post-graduate study in Lied and Oratorio under Professor Wolfgang Holzmair in addition to active participation in master classes held by Brigitte Fassbender, Edith Mathis, Sherrill Milnes, Harald Stamm and Bernd Weikl. Since 1998 Ulf Dirk Maedler is also working closely with the coach Robert Dale Fundling
Mädler gave his opera debut at the Mozarteum in the role of Papageno from Mozart’s opera “The Magic Flute”. Between 1998 – 2001 he received guest engagements in various opera houses including "Salzburg Landestheater", "Südostbayerisches (southeast Bavaria) Städtebundtheater Passau", "Opernhaus der Bühnen Graz" and "Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe".
After a guest engagement at the opera house in Magdeburg in the spring of 2001 he was extended a contract from April 2001 till July 2009. In 2002 he was the recipient of a talent award sponsored by the “Gesellschaft zur Förderung des Theaters Magdeburg e.V.” The “Richard Wagner Verband Magdeburg e.V.“ scholarship recipient has added several roles to his repertoire which include, Dr. Falke ("Die Fledermaus"), Papageno ("The Magic Flute"), Figaro ("Le nozze di Figaro"), Guglielmo ("Così fan tutte"), Yakusidé ("Madama Butterfly"), Blansac ("La scala di seta"), Moralès ("Carmen"), Zurga ("Les Pêcheurs de perles"), Silvano ("Un ballo in maschera"), Marcello ("La Bohème"), Ping (“Turandot”), Wolfram von Eschenbach ("Tannhäuser"), Belcore ("L'Elisir d'amore") and Figaro ("Il barbiere di Siviglia").
The versatile young baritone engages himself with compositions by Telemann (for example, the opening concert of the “17th Magdeburger Telemann-Festage” in March of 2004 or the tile role of the Telemann/Händel opera “Otto”) as well as contemporary works like Menotti’s “Amelia Goes to the Ball” and “The old Maid and the Thief” or as Bruno in the German premiere of the chamber opera “Parthenogenesis” from James MacMillan as well as the role of Franz Moor in the world premiere of Ludger Vollmer’s opera “Schillers Räuber – Rap'n Breakdance Opera”..
Ulf Dirk Mädler’s first CD (MDG60112422) came onto the market in April 2005 on which he is singing the Baritone-Part in Henze’s 2nd Violin Concerto, conducted by Christian Ehwald. This production was awarded by the jury of “Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik” in summer 2005.
Guest engagements brought Mädler to the theatre in Kassel, Germany in the spring of 2006 where he assumed the role of Sam in Bernstein’s “Trouble in Tahiti”, in addition to “Teatro Verde” in Venice, Italy in May of 2007, where he performed the role of Pappacoda in the Renè-Kollo-production of Strauß’s operetta “A Night in Venice”.
In September 2008 he was guest artist by Verdi Week at the opera house in Hamburg, Germany.
