The dutch baritone Tim Kuypers did his Master of Opera at the conservatoire of Amsterdam and from 2011 until 2013 was a member of the Studio of the Bayerische Staatsoper in München
As a regular guest in Munich, he sang roles such as Marullo in “Rigoletto”, Lovec in “Rusalka”, Fiorello in “Il barbiere di Siviglia”, Eddy in ‘Greek’ by Turnage, Mittenhofer in “Elegie für junge Liebende” by Henze, Johansen in ‘South Pole’ by Srnka, Johann in Werther, covering Ping in “Turandot”, Harasta in “The cunning little vixen” just to name a few.
As a regular guest in Munich, he sang under chief conductor Kirill Petrenko roles like the Einäugige in “Die Frau ohne Schatten”, Haudy in “Die Soldaten” and Johanson in ‘South Pole’ and sang several roles in the world premiere of Jörg Widmann’s ‘Babylon’ with conductor Kent Nagano.
Next to that, Tim was a guest at the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland, in the Konzerthaus in Berlin, Théâtre de Champs Elysées in Paris, the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and several opera houses in Germany, France and Austria.
On the opera stage he sang with conductors like Marco Armiliato, Fabio Luisi, Zubin Mehta, Kirill Petrenko, Vladimir Jurowski, Mark Elder, Bertrand de Billy, Paolo Carignani, Kent Nagano, Ádám Fischer, Asher Fisch, Oksana Lyniv, Marc Piollet, Emmanuel Villaume, Karl Mark Chichon, Omer Meir Wellber, Francesco Angelico to name a few and created roles with directors such as Richard Jones, Hans Neuenfels, Peter Konwitschny, Barrie Kosky, Krzysztof Warlikowski, Andreas Kriegenburg, Jürgen Rose, Philipp Stölzl, David Bösch, Carlus Padrissa/La Fura dels Baus and Christiane Pohle
His operatic repertoire also includes roles like Silvio (Pagliacci), il conte d’Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro), Wolfram (Tannhäuser), Vater (Hänsel und Gretel), Sid (Albert Herring), Belcore (Elisir d’amore), Von Wierhof (Semyon Kotko) and Pantalon (L’Amour des trois oranges). Next to opera, Kuypers is a passionate advocate for Lied and oratorio. His Lied-repertoire includes cycles like the “Kindertotenlieder”, “Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen”, “Rückert Lieder” and “des Knaben Wunderhorn” by Mahler, “Winterreise” by Schubert as well as “6 Monologe aus Jedermann” by Martin.
A few highlights from recent engagements are the role of Von Wierhof in Prokofjiev's ‘Semjon Kotko’ with Vladimir Jurowski in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the reprise of Srnka's 'South Pole' as Johansen at the Bayerische Staatsoper with Kirill Petrenko and Eddy in Turnage's 'Greek' with conductor Oksana Lyniv and director Wolfgang Nägele and the role of Mathieu in ‘Andrea Chénier’ in Théâtre de Champs Elysées in Paris as wel as in Munich.
Future engagements at the Bayerische Staatsoper include the Short and the Obstreperous Prisoner in Janácek's 'From the house of the dead' with conductor Simone Young and director Frank Castorf, Sonora in ‘la Fanciulla del West’ with director Andreas Dresen and conductor James Gaffigan, Marullo in Rigoletto, Haudy in Peter Konwitschny's new production of 'die Soldaten' at the Staatstheater Nürnberg and Manz in ‘A village Romeo and Juliet’ by Delius with Sir Mark Elder and the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in the Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam.
