Theodor Guschlbauer was born in Vienna. He studied piano and violoncello and later conducting with the legendary Hans Swarowsky which he continued with Matacic and Karajan.
 

His first engagements brought him to the Vienna Volksoper and to the Landestheater Salzburg where he was musical director.

In 1969 Theodor Guschlbauer became music director of the Lyon Opera and in 1975 General Music Director in Linz. From 1983 to 1997 he was Principal Conductor of the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra and moved on to become Music Director of the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz which he remained until 2001.

Theodor Guschlbauer has worked with many of the world’s leading orchestras: Vienna Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, RSO Berlin, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Orchestra della Scala di Milano, Santa Cecilia Rome, RAI Torino, NHK Orchestra Tokyo and Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.

He has performed at such renowned and prestigious Festivals as Salzburg, Aix-en-Provence, Orange, Prague, Bregenz, Flanders, Oxford, Lucerne, Montreux, Ascona, Verona and the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.

As a guest Theodor Guschlbauer has conducted at the opera houses in Hamburg, Cologne, Munich, Vienna, Geneva, Brussels, Lisbon and the Bastille in Paris. He has made more than 60 recordings of which man were awarded a Grand Prix du Disque.

The Goethe Foundation in Basle honoured Theodor Guschlbauer by awarding him the Mozart-Prize. He is also recipient of the Austrian Honorary Cross for Science and Art, the Prix d’or of the Alsace Foundation and the Commander of the Cross of the French Legion d’honneur.
