Greek baritone Tassis Christoyannis made his Royal Opera debut in 2016 as Giorgio Germont (La traviata).
Christoyannis was born in Athens. He studied singing, conducting and composing at the Athens Conservatory and singing with Aldo Protti in Italy, winning the Aldo Protti Gold Medal in 1994. He was a member of Greek National Opera 1995–9, singing roles including Guglielmo (Così fan tutte), Papageno (Die Zauberflöte), Figaro (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Belcore (L’elisir d’amore), Don Carlo (Ernani) and Eugene Onegin. He has been principal baritone of Deutsche Opera am Rhein since 2000, where his many roles include Ulisse (Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria), Oreste (Iphigénie en Tauride), Count Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro), Don Giovanni, Guglielmo, Dandini (La Cenerentola), Enrico (Lucia di Lammermoor), Germont, Posa (Don Carlos), Ford (Falstaff), Onegin, Hamlet, Silvio (Pagliacci) and Pelléas.
Engagements elsewhere include Germont for La Monnaie, Brussels, Rossini’s Figaro for Berlin State Opera and Vienna State Opera, Ford and Germont for Glyndebourne Festival, Marcello (La bohème), Valentin (Faust), Silvio and Olivier (Capriccio) for Paris Opéra, Germont and Montfort (Les Vêpres siciliennes) in Geneva, Macbeth, Posa and Simon Boccanegra in Bordeaux, Don Giovanni, Renato (Un ballo in maschera), Michele (Il tabarro), Gianni Schicchi in Tours and Don Giovanni in Budapest and New York and Spiridion (Le Timbre d’argent) for Opéra-Comique. He has performed in concert around the world, including at Carnegie Hall, New York. His many recordings include Bajazete (Tamerlano), Danaus (Les Danaïdes), Oreste (Andromaque) and collections of songs by Félicien David and Edouard Lalo.
