About

Born in 1978, Svetoslav Borisov is one of the dynamic and aspiring conductors of his generation. After two successful years from 2013 – 2015 as Assistant Conductor at the Bochum Symphony Orchestra he started his position as First Kapellmeister at the Theater Magdeburg with the beginning of the season 2016/2017. He also is Artistic Director of the chamber orchestra „Con fuoco“ in Graz. From 2013 – 2016 he was Music Director at the Opera Varna where he regularly returns as Guest Conductor.

After first piano lessons in his hometown Ruse in Bulgaria, he started to study trumpet at the age of 12 at the music school of Varna and continued his studies at the Music University in Sofia and at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz. In 2003 he joined the conducting class of Martin Sieghart and took conducting lessons with Johannes Prinz and Wolfgang Bozic. It was then that he discovered his love for opera which led him at first to the Stadttheater Klagenfurt and in 2010 as guest conductor to the opera house in Varna where he was chosen chief conductor in 2013.

Since then he has acquired an ample and varied opera repertoire, a highlight being several performances of Giuseppe Verdi’s „Don Carlo“ at the State Opera Sofia and at the Philippi Festival in Greece. In December 2014 he conducted the premiere of Emmerich Kalmans „Csárdásfürstin“ at the Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen and in March 2016 he gave his debut at the Istanbul Opera with the ballet „Le Corsaire“ by Adolphe Adam. His debut at the Magdeburg theatre was in December 2015 with Humperdinck’s „Hänsel and Gretel“.

He has collaborated with many orchestras all over Europe, among them the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn, the Bochum and the Brandenburg Symphony Orchestras, the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen, the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and the Orquesta do Algarve. Svetoslav Borisov has appeared as guest conductor in Austria, Belgium, China, the Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Romania and Switzerland. He regularly works with the Mozart Orchestra in Vienna and with the Göttingen Symphony Orchestra where he conducted a project with two concerts and a CD production in the season 2016/2017.

In November 2015 he gave his celebrated debut with the Grazer Philharmonic Orchestra, replacing Krzysztof Penderecki; in January 2016 he conducted the Bruckner-Orchestra Linz replacing Dennis Russell Davies in a program featuring Bruckner’s 4th symphony. He has worked with soloists such as Christian Altenburger, John Mark Ainsley, Carlo Colombara, Lidia Baich, Gabor Boldoczki, Yamina Maamar, Lilya Zilberstein and the Leipzig String Quartet.

In 2007 Svetoslav Borisov founded the chamber orchestra „Con fuoco“ in Graz to perform concert and opera projects in Austria and abroad (Donizetti’s „Rita“ in 2012, Suppé’s „Die schöne Galathee“ in March 2014, Lortzing’s „Die Opernprobe“ in November 2014). In 2015 he started a project to perform all Mozart symphonies. He is also highly engaged in crossover and music education projects for young people and adults.

Svetoslav Borisov attended masterclasses with Ralf Weikert, Bernard Haitink, Jesus Lopez Cobos and Kurt Masur. In 2010 he participated in the International Conducting Academy Bochum led by Steven Sloane, Sylvain Cambreling and Roger Norrington.
