Overview

Any appearance by Yo-Yo Ma is an extraordinary event. Edward Elgar’s popular concerto is the perfect vehicle for Ma’s blend of keen intelligence and a firmly beating heart. And Stéphane Denève is on home soil for the delicate, multi-layered textures of Claude Debussy’s portrait of the ocean, La Mer. Subscribers have first access to tickets for this concert.

A few things to know:

Yo-Yo Ma asks big questions with the music he makes. “What is our place in the universe?” “Where do we sit between the past and future, between human and nature?” “How can we sit and talk and play together?” He does this with ambitious projects that reach everyone from retired West Virginia coal miners, to creative peacemakers in Tunisia, to community leaders in Los Angeles.

Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto is still linked with Jacqueline Du Pré, the English cellist who brought the work to international fame. There is a link with Yo-Yo Ma: the cello he plays was once Du Pré’s. He thinks of this connection each and every time he performs the Elgar concerto.

Claude Debussy was a radical. “I feel more and more that music,” wrote Debussy, “is not something that can flow inside a rigorous, traditional form.” Debussy dismissed those who “love and defend traditions which, for me, no longer exist. [Such traditions] were not all as fine and valuable as people make out. [T]he dust of the past is not always respectable.”
