Stefano Bellon is an Italian composer. After completing his academic studies under the guidance of Wolfango Dalla Vecchia, he completed his studies under the guidance of Franco Donatoni at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena and the National Academy of Santa Cecilia in Rome.
In 1982 he obtained a scholarship from the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique in Paris, and attended courses and seminars with Pierre Boulez, Brian Ferneyhough, Giacomo Manzoni and Salvatore Sciarrino.
He was a professor at the University of Venice, and the conservatories of Udine, Adria, Rovigo and Trieste. He also worked as an arranger in the field of jazz music, as well as a composer for radio and television productions.
He has written essays and analyzes on the music of Bruno Maderna, published by Leo Olschki in Italy and by Basalte (CNRS-Université de Paris) in France.
Stylistically, Bellon started from positions close to those of his teacher Franco Donatoni and Luciano Berio (to whom he dedicated the song Paul Mc Cartney Commentaries, performed at the Venice Biennale in 2004).
In some respects close to composers such as Louis Andriessen or Bruno Maderna: they share this rethinking of experiences in the field of jazz within a traditional writing, and the development of a compositional attitude of post-serial derivation, also applied to materials of extra-cultured or, more recently, non-Western tradition (to underline the consistent use of musical instruments belonging to non-European cultures - especially in collaborations with the Atlas Ensemble of Amsterdam, the CMEK of Seoul).
