About

Percussion The Hague (SDH) (formerly Percussion Group The Hague) is a Dutch ensemble that consists of four to six percussionists.

The ensemble was founded in 1977 and has been presenting itself since 2009 under the name Slagwerk Den Haag. In the meantime the members have changed a few times (at this moment the ensemble is in its fourth generation). The musicians of Slagwerk Den Haag focus on playing, developing and renewing contemporary percussion music in the most diverse forms: from existing repertoire, through new assignments in collaboration with composers, to research into the limits and possibilities of organized sound and new instruments . The concert programs range from large international collaborations to small-scale laboratory projects, from chamber music concerts to youth programs. Every year the ensemble gives 5-8 composition assignments. SDH regularly collaborates with other ensembles and with other art disciplines (dance, theater, visual arts). As a specialized ensemble, Slagwerk Den Haag played in almost all countries in Europe, the United States, the Middle East, Argentina, Korea and Japan.

Repertoire

Their repertoire covers the entire western literature of percussion compositions, from the first compositions for percussion ensemble from the first half of the twentieth century to the large percussion saxons of Iannis Xenakis. SDH also actively contributed to a new repertoire by collaborating with composers such as Mauricio Kagel, John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Steve Reich. In addition, SDH also has an active assignment policy under both more established names from the new music and the youngest group of composers. The composers Guo Wenjing, James Wood, Michael Gordon, Peter Adriaansz, Michel van der Aa, Yannis Kyriakides, Seung-Ah Oh, Kate Moore, Christopher Fox and Donnacha Dennehy, among others, wrote for the ensemble. Often new instruments are needed for a new composition, which are then built by or for the ensemble.

Occupancy

The permanent line-up consists of Fedor Teunisse, Niels Meliefste, Pepe Garcia, Frank Wienk and Joey Marijs. Guest and former players regularly supplement the ensemble, such as Marcel Andriessen. The artistic leadership is in the hands of Fedor Teunisse, business director is Liesbeth Kok.
