About

Homogeneous and individual, light and coarse, precise and free – this wealth of different facets characterizes Sjaella’s sound. The six young signers found their shared path in 2005, but are still discovering new avenues. They are open to influences from the outside, they love musical variety and they have the courage to cross lines. Their repertoire is correspondingly broad. They feel at home in very different genres.

Their 2013 CD ‘Preisung’, which was released with the ‘querstand’ label, features modern arrangements of religious texts and was nominated for the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik. Two years later the ensemble released its jazz record ‘lifted’.

Their versatility and their proximity to their audience have, for many years now, earned Sjaella engagements at acclaimed music festivals and in traditional concert halls in Germany and other countries (Rheingau Musik Festival, Meraner Musikwochen, Amman Jazz Festival, Müpa Budapest, Wiener Konzerthaus, Wiener Musikverein), guest performances on radio and television (Berlinale, Annettes DaschSalon) and first prizes at international competitions for vocal music (Tampereen Sävel Finland, Jugend kulturell, vokal.total Graz). Concert tours have taken them to Poland, Finland, Italy and Jordan to name a few. Their trip to Jordan was documented by BR Klassik and WDR.

In 2016 Sjaella was made the official ambassador of the SOS Children’s Villages worldwide. In this role they visited several of the organization’s facilities in Israel and Palestine in February 2017, giving workshops for the children and adolescents living there. They were able to pick up on this concept again when they co-operated with the Goethe Institute in Amman to support children of refugee children.

‘Sjæl’ or ‘Själ’ is the Danish/Swedish word for ‘soul’.
