Italian choreographer Simona Bucci made her Royal Opera debut in 2013 as movement director for Nabucco, directed by Daniele Abbado.
Bucci trained as an architect and dancer. In 1991 she joined the Alwin Nikolais Dance Company, New York, as a soloist, and went on to dance with the company at major theatres worldwide. In 2000 she began to work as assistant to Carolyn Carlson (for whose company she has choreographed Cenere), and that year also became co-ordinator of the Accademia Isola Danza of the Venice Biennale. In 2002 she founded her own company, Compagnia Simona Bucci, for which her works include Enter Lady Macbeth, Malbianco, Portrait and Giuditta e Oloferne. In addition to her choreographic work she teaches dance in collaboration with the Nikolais-Louis Foundation for Dance.
Bucci has worked regularly with Abbado since 2007, on productions including Battistelli’s Miracolo a Milano (Reggio Emilia), Cyrano de Bergerac (Rome), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Bari), Rigoletto (Le Fenice, Venice), Oberon (Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse), La traviata (São Paulo), Don Carlo (Vienna State Opera) and Attila (Bologna).
