Mezzo-soprano Sian Sharp studied in Melbourne at the Victorian College of the Arts, where she completed a Bachelor of Music Performance in Voice (Honours). Following this, she attained a Graduate Diploma of Music (Opera), at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University.

Sian won the National Aria in 2002 and has twice been a finalist in the McDonalds Aria competition as well as being awarded the Tinkler Encouragement prize in the Australian Singing Competition, Mathy Awards. She was a vocal finalist in the 2001 ABC Symphony Australia Young Performers Awards, and has been the recipient of scholarships from Rotary, the Linda Edith Allen Estate, the Austral Salon and the Mabel Kent Estate.

In 2003, Sian was a Developing Artist with Opera Queensland and completed an intensive Italian course at the Istituto Europeo in Florence, Italy. Following this she re-located to Sydney where she took part in the first performance of a new work based on the life of Eugene Goossens, Eugene and Roie, for the Sydney Festival. Later in the year she sang Hansel in Pacific Opera’s production of Hansel and Gretel and in 2005 Sian featured in Sydney Philharmonia’s series of Bach concerts, broadcast on ABC Classic FM.

Sian became a member of Opera Australia’s Moffatt Oxenbould Young Artists’ Development Program in 2007 and has since sung many roles for Opera Australia including Olga Eugene Onegin, Maddalena Rigoletto, Inez Il Trovatore, Venus Orpheus in the Underworld, Curra La forza del destino, Nancy Albert Herring, Siegrune Die Walküre for the Melbourne Ring Cycle, Rosina The Barber of Seville, Valencienne The Merry Widow, Second Lady Die Zauberflöte, Dorabella Così fan tutte, Hermia A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Cherubino Le Nozze di Figaro, Hansel Hansel and Gretel, Stephano Romeo and Juliet, Annio La Clemenza di Tito, Page Salome, Suzuki Madama Butterfly, Kitchen Boy Rusalka, Mercédès Carmen, and the title role in Carmen for Opera Australia’s Northern Territory and West Australian tour, along with Opera Australia’s performance at the Poly Theatre in Beijing for the Meet in Beijing Arts Festival and performances in Opera Australia’s Great Opera Hits on a Sunday Afternoon throughout the summer at the Sydney Opera House.

On the concert platform, Sian has performed with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra under Oleg Caetani performing the role of Mary in The Flying Dutchman, and with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra under Vladimir Ashkenazy performing Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Sian also participated in concerts for the re-opening of Hamer Hall, Melbourne, in 2012.

For Opera Australia in 2015 Sian’s performances included Second Lady in The Magic Flute, Suzuki in Madama Butterfly and Cherubino in The Marriage of Figaro. In 2016, Sian will perform the roles of Federica in Luisa Miller, Princess Clarice in The Love for Three Oranges, Mercédès in Carmen and Waltraute in The Ring Cycle.
