Founded in 1952, the Shanghai National Orchestra is the earliest modern large-scale national orchestra in China. It has always been known for its distinctive style and exquisite performance. It has always played a pivotal role in the development of Chinese folk music. There have been a number of artists who have made outstanding contributions to the development of national music, such as Zhang Ziqian, Lu Chunling, Sun Yude, Gu Guanren, Yan Huifen, Yu Xunda, and Gong Yi.
The Shanghai-style orchestra has become a large-scale national orchestra with four parts of the string, plucking, blowing and percussion, forming its own professional performance season and accumulating. A collection of contemporary classics and brand projects. At the same time, the orchestra also launched many public performances to make continuous efforts to popularize Chinese folk music. Orchestra players have traveled all over the country and dozens of countries and regions around the world, and are known as the "most beautiful Chinese orchestra."
In recent years, the orchestra has pursued the contemporary values of traditional folk music with the theme of “national music, contemporary temperament, and international expression”. It has integrated Chinese spirit, Chinese value and Chinese responsibility into the creation of national music, and created the “Marine Folk Music”. Homeland, "Shanghai Legend, The Bund Story", "The Flower of the Garden", "The Book of Poetry and Paintings in the National Music", and other original styles of Haipai folk music. Among them, "Marine Folk Music" not only was highly praised by the audience at home and abroad as the opening ceremony of the 18th China Shanghai International Arts Festival, but also went to Greece as a special performance of the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Greece, making outstanding contributions to cultural diplomacy. "Common Home" participated in the 20th Shanghai International Arts Festival and was well received. The concert version of "The Sea Life Folk Music" went to the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, and Germany in early 2018, and it was a great success in the nearly 20-day tour of the first-class concert halls of the four cities and eight cities.
In the future, the orchestra will continue to work hard to promote the new vitality of Chinese national music, and to show a new era and a new atmosphere with a more open and inclusive and more glamorous national voice.
