About
Sava Vemić was born in Belgrade and studied at the Faculty of Music in his home city before joining the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindeman Young Artists Development Program from 2014 to 2017. He has excelled in numerous competitions (earning First Prize at the 2016 International Opera Index Competition in New York and First Prize at the 2014 Gerda Lissner Competition).
He made his professional debut in 2013 in the role of Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte) in Belgrade and then sang the roles of Count Rodolfo in La Sonnambula and Arcas in Iphigénie en Aulide at the Juilliard Theatre; Ernesto in Parisina d’Este and Sir Walter Raleigh in Roberto Devereux with The Opera Orchestra of New York; and Osmin in Die Entführung auf dem Serail and Bartolo in Le Nozze di Figaro with the International Vocal Arts Institute in Tel-Aviv. He made his Metropolitan Opera debut during the 2016 / 2017 season in Nabucco (the High Priest) under the baton of James Levine and then performed the roles of Prince Gremin (Eugene Onegin) with the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra and Sparafucile (Rigoletto) at the National Theatre of Guatemala.
He also sang the basso section of Haydn’s Nelson Mass at Carnegie Hall. The following season, he played Prince Gremin in Hawaii and made his debut appearances at the Aix Festival (a Lackey in Ariadne auf Naxos) and the Verbier Festival (Sparafucile in Rigoletto and Quinault in Adriana Lecouvreur under the direction of Valery Gergiev). This season, he is performing the roles of Sarastro at the New National Theatre in Tokyo and Death in Der Kaiser von Atlantis at the Maestranza in Seville.
