Overview

Bruce Liu first came to the world’s attention when he won the Chopin Piano Competition 2021 in Warsaw. Here he joins the VFCO under Daniel Harding for Chopin’s poetic Piano Concerto No. 1, followed by Dvořák’s mighty Seventh Symphony.

Chopin was only 19 in 1829 when he composed his First Piano Concerto, but his piano writing already carries the exquisitely curlicued melodies and Polish folk influence of his mature style – not least the central Romance with its intent ‘to convey the impression one receives when the eye rests on a beloved landscape that calls up in one’s soul beautiful memories.’ The sparkling finale then nods to a syncopated Polish folk dance, the krakowiak. Dvořák’s Seventh Symphony of 1885 is both uncharacteristically dark, and without his usual Czech-folk-inspired melodies. A commission from London’s Royal Philharmonic Society, to which he had just been elected an honorary member, its Allegro maestoso opens over a tense pedal point and, after much drama, closes in anxious quiet. The following Adagio mostly offers respite from darkness, if not from drama. The Scherzo then throws more turbulence into its dance, before a mighty finale.

Salle des Combins is the Verbier Festival’s main concert hall. It normally seats 1,419. Each row is on a separate tier, which guarantees an excellent view of the stage. Improvements to the soundproofing and heat insulation make this a very high-quality non-permanent venue. All of the Festival’s symphonic concerts, operas, large world music, jazz, dance events and some recitals are presented here.
