Overview

Yuja Wang stars as piano soloist in George Gershwin’s famous 1924 fusion of classical and jazz, Rhapsody in Blue, bookended by colourfully scored orchestral masterpieces by Ravel and Mozart.

Ravel’s colourful 1911 ballet, Ma mère l’Oye, began life as a piano four-hands suite for two children he knew. Opening on Sleeping Beauty, its Prélude tips into the whirring spinning wheel, being pricked, and the courtly pavane to which she falls asleep. The subsequent fairytale-inspired movements are her dreams. Then, following the pentatonic glitter of ‘Laideronette, Empress of the Pagodas,’ we return to the serene enchanted garden where she awakes. Seventeen years later, Ravel would be fascinated by fellow pianist-composer Gershwin’s jazz-infused concert works. The latter said his single-movement Rhapsody in Blue of 1924, with its famous opening clarinet wail, was inspired by the ‘steely rhythms’ and ‘rattle-ty bang’ of a train ride. Clarinets also play a prominent role in Mozart’s grand, oboe-less Symphony No. 39 of 1788, especially in the central trio of its third movement Menuet.

Salle des Combins is the Verbier Festival’s main concert hall. It normally seats 1,419. Each row is on a separate tier, which guarantees an excellent view of the stage. Improvements to the soundproofing and heat insulation make this a very high-quality non-permanent venue. All of the Festival’s symphonic concerts, operas, large world music, jazz, dance events and some recitals are presented here.
