Reto Finger, born in Bern, studied law at the University of Zurich and then worked for two years at the local district court.
During his studies he wrote his first plays. Since 2002 he works as a freelance author for theater and radio. In 2003/04 he took part in the Werkstatt dramenProzessor of the Theater Winkelwiese in Zurich for young dramatists. In 2004, the invitation to the 2nd Authors' Workshop Days at the Burgtheater Wien followed. In 2005 he received the Kleist Prize for Young Drama for Cold Land. This was followed by work in dramaturgy at the Nationaltheater Mannheim, the Schauspiel Essen, the Stadttheater Bern and the Schauspielhaus Bochum. As a librettist he has already worked several times with Felix Leuschner, u. a. for Die Eichbaumoper at the Musiktheater in the district Gelsenkirchen. From 2010 to 2012 he was President of the Association of Authors of Switzerland. For the Bavarian State Opera he has written the libretto of Requiem for a living.
