Reinhold Friedrich, who was born in 1958 in Weingarten, Baden, began his career as principal trumpet with the RSO Frankfurt. After winning an award at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich in 1986, he started to receive international engagements. Since 1999, Friedrich has worked as a freelance soloist, performing with the Berlin Baroque Soloists, La Stagione Frankfurt, the Cappella Andrea Barca, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, the Bamberg and Vienna Symphony Orchestras, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. 

He has also played principal trumpet with the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA since 2003. Friedrich has worked with such conductors as Claudio Abbado, Semyon Bychkov, Peter Eötvös, Michael Gielen, Philippe Herreweghe, Christopher Hogwood, Ingo Metzmacher, and Jonathan Nott. As a chamber musician, he performs with the pianist Eriko Takezawa, the percussionist Robyn Schulkowsky, and the organists Martin Lücker and Sebastian Küchler-Blessing; he also belongs to the ensemble L’Éventail de Jeanne. Friedrich is moreover a master of the historical keyed trumpet and devotes himself to both early and contemporary music. He has premiered works by Wolfang Rihm, Rebecca Saunders, Hans Werner Henze, and Adriana Hölszky. His recording of Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s Nobody knows de trouble I see and his album of Russian trumpet concertos received Echo Klassik awards. The Trumpet Collection, comprising ten CDs, was released in 2018 to mark his 60th birthday. Reinhold Friedrich has led a trumpet class at the Academy of Music in Karlsruhe since 1986; he also teaches as an honorary professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and in Hiroshima, Japan.
