Placido Domingo (born 21 January 1941 in Madrid) is a legendary Spanish tenor, conductor and opera administrator.
He performed more than 150 operatic roles, setting a record for tenors. Among his iconic performances are Othello in Verdi's Othello, Cavaradossi in Puccini's Tosca, Radames in Verdi's Aida, Don Jose in Bizet's Carmen, and Samson in Samson and Delilah Saint-Saens.
He has performed on all major stages of the world, including the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, Covent Garden, Vienna Opera and Bayreuth Festival.
Participated in historical productions such as Othello directed by Franco Zeffirelli and Turandot in Beijing in 1998.
He toured as a solo artist and as a member of the Three Tenors.
Hundreds of audio and video recordings, including complete operas and solo albums. Key works include Carmen (1975), Tosca (1976) and Othello (1991).
Winner of 9 Grammy Awards and 4 Latin Grammy Awards for his vocal and conducting work.
Awarded orders and honorary titles in Spain, Mexico, the United States and Austria, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom of the United States (2011).
Founded the Operalia competition in 1993, which opens up young talents such as Javier Camarena and Rolando Villazon.
