About

The Austrian director Philipp M. Krenn was born in Vienna, where he received his first musical education as a soloist with the Vienna Boys ' Choir.

After starting his technical studies, he graduated from the Vienna Conservatory with Elfriede Ott. This was followed by engagements as an actor at the Wiener Volkstheater and the Landestheater St. Pölten.

In 2008, he began his activity as assistant Director, first at the Theater an der Wien, with the further stations, such as the Vienna state Opera, the Salzburg festival, the Wiener Festwochen, the Berliner Staatsoper, La Fenice in Venice, the Royal theatre in Copenhagen and at the Teatro Verdi in Trieste.

In the following years, he has assisted well-known directors such as Robert Carsen, Alvis Hermanis, Damiano Michieletto, Sven-Eric Bechtolf, Torsten Fischer, Christof Loy, David Alden, Christine Mielitz, Vincent Boussard and Philipp Stölzl.

From 2009 to 2012 he worked together with Gustav Kuhn at numerous opera productions of the Tiroler Festspiele Erl before staging "das kleine Ich-bin-Ich" (book: Mira Lobe, music: Marie Luise Haugk) as a musical theatre play for children in 2012.

In 2013, Philipp M. Krenn Damiano Michieletto's production of " Il Trittico "(G. Puccini) re-opened at the Royal Theatre of Copenhagen and assisted Philipp Stölzl in his production of" Il Trovatore " at the Vienna Festival and at the Staatsoper Berlin.

In 2014, Philipp M. Krenn staged " Orest "(Manfred Trojahn) at the Neue Oper Wien, before he directed Aron Stein's production of" Das Liebesverbot " (Richard Wagner) to Trieste as a revival director. 

He worked together with Alvis Hermanis on the production of "Il Trovatore" (Giuseppe Verdi)at the Salzburg Festival, a successful production which he will bring to the stage of the Salzburg Festival as a re-recording director in 2015. 

In the 2014/15 season Philipp M. Krenn was directed to the Vienna Chamber Opera, where he directed "Les Mamelles de Tirésias"(Poulenc) and "L'heure espagnole"(Ravel), before dedicating himself in the 2015/16 season at the theater Sankt Gallen to the Opera "Pollicino" by Werner Henze.

In the same season Philipp M. Krenn was in charge of the re-opening of the productions "Cavalleria Rusticana" and "I Pagliacci" at the Semperoper Dresden, which he worked together with Philipp Stölzl, before returning to Vienna where he staged "the little Sweep" (Benjamin Britten) in 2016.

In the summer of 2016 he oversees the WA Salzburg Festival Cosi Fan Tutte by Sven Eric Bechtolf as assistant director, as well as in Paris in September 2016 Samson u Dalila by Damiano Michieletto. In Wiesbaden the Premiere of Peter Grimes Britten will take place on February 4, 2017.
