Peter Heilker was born in Mülheim / Ruhr.
He studied Theater Studies, Modern German Literature and Psycholinguistics in Munich and worked from 1994 as a dramaturge assistant at the Munich Biennale for New Music Theater. From 1997/98 he was music dramaturge at the Theater St. Gallen / Switzerland, from 1998 to 2008 dramaturge at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and here from the season 2006/07 senior dramaturge. He taught at the Academy of Music and Theater in Munich in the degree program Director. Since the season 2008/09 he is Opera Director at the Theater St. Gallen. As a production dramaturg he was u. a. in collaboration with Jürgen Rose and Christof Loy at the Glyndebourne Festival, at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein and at the Bavarian State Opera.
