Peter Hagmann has been working as a music critic since 1972.
Born in Basel on April 13, 1950, he obtained his diploma in 1978 as an organist and earned his doctorate in 1982 at the University of his hometown in musicology. From 1972 to 1986 he worked as a freelancer for various media, first with the Basler National Zeitung and the Basler Zeitung, which emerged from it. In 1986 he went to the "Neue Zürcher Zeitung", whose feature pages he co-designed from 1989 to 2015 as an editor.
In addition, he was entrusted with teaching assignments at Swiss universities and universities. At the Zurich University of Music he acts as a reviewer, appointing committees such as the Schubert Competition in Graz, the Credit Suisse Young Artist Award, the Beethoven Competition Bonn, the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik or the Reinhard Schulz Prize for contemporary music journalism in Darmstadt him as a juror. In addition, he participates in programs of the Swiss Radio and Television (SRF) and the Southwest Broadcasting Corporation (SWR).
In 1990 he received the Critics' Prize of the Steirischer Herbst Graz, in 1999 a recognition award from the UBS Culture Foundation Zurich, in 2001 the Critics Prize of the City of Salzburg and in 2009 the Inge Morath Prize for Science Journalism of the Province of Styria.
