Orlin Anastassov (Bulgarian: Орлин Анастасов) (born 1976) is a Bulgarian opera singer with an active international career performing leading bass roles. A winner of the 1999 Operalia competition, he has also performed many times as the bass soloist in the Verdi Requiem.
Orlin Anastassov, born on January 1, 1976, in Ruse, Bulgaria, is a distinguished operatic bass renowned for his powerful voice and commanding stage presence. Coming from a family of opera singers—his parents, Maria Venzislavova and Anastas Anastasov, were prominent figures in the Ruse Opera—he was immersed in the world of music from an early age. He began his vocal training under the guidance of Maestro Georgi Deliganev. At the age of 20, Anastassov made his operatic debut as the King of Egypt in Verdi's "Aida" at the Rousse State Opera. His career gained international momentum in 1999 when he won First Prize at Plácido Domingo's Operalia competition. That same year, he debuted at Milan's La Scala as Don Basilio in Rossini's "The Barber of Seville," conducted by Riccardo Chailly. This performance marked the beginning of a series of engagements at prestigious opera houses worldwide, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Vienna State Opera, and the Paris Opera.Anastassov's extensive repertoire encompasses over 50 roles across Italian, French, and Russian operas. Notable portrayals include Attila in Verdi's "Attila," Filippo II in "Don Carlo," Zaccaria in "Nabucco," and the title role in Mussorgsky's "Boris Godunov." He has collaborated with esteemed conductors such as Riccardo Chailly, Sir Colin Davis, Georges Prêtre, Lorin Maazel, Daniel Oren, Valery Gergiev, and Yuri Temirkanov. His performances have graced stages like the Arena di Verona, Teatro Real in Madrid, and the Salzburg Festival. Beyond his singing career, Anastassov is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of opera talent. He has conducted masterclasses globally, including sessions at the Sofia Opera and Ballet, the Wexford Festival in Ireland, and conservatories in Georgia and Romania. In 2023, he held his inaugural masterclass at the Sofia Opera, focusing on refining participants' vocal techniques and interpretative skills. Transitioning into stage direction, Anastassov has undertaken significant projects, notably a grand production of Verdi's "Attila." This ambitious endeavor, a co-production among ten theaters across four continents, premiered in Georgia in April 2024 and is slated for performances in various international venues, including Italy, Spain, Lithuania, the United States, Mexico, and several Arab countries. Anastassov's contributions to opera, both as a performer and mentor, continue to influence and inspire the global operatic community.
