The symphony orchestra “Northern Symphony” of the St. Petersburg State Music Hall Theater (from March 2023 – the St. Petersburg State Musical Theater named after F. I. Chaliapin) was created on June 1, 2016; it was headed by Fabio Mastrangelo, artistic director of the theater. Currently, the Northern Symphony is one of the leading St. Petersburg orchestras.
Famous pianists Ekaterina Mechetina, Polina Osetinskaya, Stanislav Chigadayev, Oleg Vainstein, Giuseppe Albanese and Ludovico Troncanetti, violinists Sergei Girshenko, Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Count Murzha and Alexey Lundin, cellists Sergei Roldugin and Denis Shapovalov, guitarist Dmitry Illarionov, saxophone performed with him East Ula Asdal Roccones, clarinetist Giampiero Sobrino, singers Ildar Abdrazakov, Larisa Dolina, Vasilisa Berzhanskaya and Svetlana Kasyan, soloists of the Mariinsky and Mikhailovsky theaters, the St. Petersburg House of Music. The ensemble's extensive repertoire includes works of different eras and styles, Russian and foreign classics, works by contemporary composers.
In addition to its own venue, the orchestra performs at the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theater, the House of Scientists. M. Gorky RAS, etc. He regularly participates in the St. Petersburg International Festival “Opera for Everyone”, the International Arts Festival “Elena”, the festival “Honorary Citizens of St. Petersburg”, as well as in the programs of the St. Petersburg International Cultural Forum , St. Petersburg International Book Salon and Festival “Music of the Palace Bridge”.
The team is actively touring. In 2019, he took part in the Russian Seasons project in Germany and performed in Italy and Estonia. As part of the Festival of Musical Theaters of Russia “Seeing the Music”, the orchestra participated in the performance of “Don Pasquale” at the Moscow New Opera Theater. E. V. Kolobova (2019) and “Die Fledermaus” at the Moscow Musical Theater “Helikon-Opera” (2021).
The most striking events in the life of the Northern Symphony in the 2021–2022 season were the multimedia musical project “ZHIVAGO. I went on stage...”, concerts “Russian Way. From Mussorgsky to Prokofiev”, “In the Beginning Was the Word”, “Russian Waltz”, “Leningrad Notebook”, “Light of Hope”, etc. In September 2021, the premiere of the production of “The Magic Flute” took place with the participation of an orchestra conducted by Fabio Mastrangelo, choir and theater soloists.
In 2023, the group plays Rachmaninov's music at various venues, including the Mariinsky Theater; In addition, he performed the “Shakespeare Passion” concert at the State Academic Chapel of St. Petersburg and a number of other concerts.
