About

The Dutch Student Orchestra is a symphony orchestra that has been reformed every year since 1952 from students from Dutch universities and HBO institutions.

The orchestra consists mainly of amateur musicians, but it also includes students from conservatories. However, the conductor, composer and soloists are professionals. The orchestra performs ten or eleven times a year in different cities in the Netherlands. In between the Dutch concerts, the orchestra gives two concerts abroad. The tour ends with the concert in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. The proceeds of the concerts are donated to a charity, nowadays the Foundation for Refugee Students UAF. The orchestra plays works from the classical repertoire, but also gives an assignment to a Dutch composer each year to compose a new piece for orchestra.

In 2019 the NSO will be 67 years old and from 10 to 25 February the orchestra will travel throughout the country to give a concert every evening in one of the most beautiful halls in the Netherlands, with trips to Leuven and Berlin. In addition to regular concerts, the NSO will also play a concert in 2019 especially for lonely and vulnerable elderly people. During this Special Concert, which will take place at De Harmonie in Leeuwarden, half of the room will be filled with lonely and vulnerable elderly people who can visit the concert in a low-threshold manner in collaboration with the National Elderly Fund. Previously played for autistic children, demented elderly, children with intellectual disabilities and refugees. During the anniversary year in 2012, the public consisted of deaf and hard of hearing children. The children were able to experience the music through balloons and scents that were distributed throughout the orchestra hall.
