As an integrated orchestra, the Salzburg Mozarteum University's Symphony Orchestra has played an important role in the Mozarteum University's past and present.
Many prominent orchestra musicians acquired their first experience at the podium in this orchestra. The Symphony Orchestra has been conducted by personalities such as Bernhard Paumgartner, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Michael Gielen, Sir André Previn, Peter Schneider or Gerd Albrecht. Since 1999, Dennis Russel Davies has been Chief Conductor of the Mozarteum University’s Symphony. The Bläserphilharmonie Salzburg stands for Wind music of the highest standard. Hansjörg Angerer, professor at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, has been the orchestra’s principal conductor since 2002. In various constellations the Bläserphilharmonie Mozarteum Salzburg plays music of contemporary composers besides works from the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods, as well as traditional Austrian music. The members of the Bläserphilharmonie are selected instrumentalists and graduates from the Mozarteum University in Salzburg. Many of them have won prizes in national and international competitions, and already play in renowned orchestras. The Chamber Choir of the Mozarteum University is made up of students from various departments and has enriched concert life at the Mozarteum University since 2007. For Herbert Böck, who has been professor of choir and ensemble conducting at the Mozarteum University since 1995, the main criteria in choosing singers are the quality of the voice, sureness of intonation, the ability to sight-read, as well as the ability to blend with other voices, and several years experience in very good chamber choirs.
