In the 2004/2005 season, the Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Hochschule für Musik und Theater "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" Leipzig (HMT Leipzig) launched the "Mendelssohn orchestra Academy".
Thus, the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy initiated, the traditional connection between the oldest music University in Germany, and the world's oldest civic orchestra in Germany was revived: Gewandhaus Kapellmeister Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was the Spiritus Rector and head of the Conservatory; members of the Gewandhaus Directorate were at the same time, the Board of Directors of the Conservatory, and, not least, under-informed and under leading musicians of the Gewandhaus orchestra up to today at the College.
Gewandhausorchester and HMT Leipzig combine the goal of preparing highly gifted young musicians for work in a top orchestra, combined with the desire to pass on and maintain their own sound ideal as well as the traditional playing culture of the Gewandhausorchester.
The "Mendelssohn orchestral Academy," is based on several pillars, the participation in the Gewandhaus orchestra and studying chamber music at the HMT Leipzig. For a period of two years, most for the Academics the opportunity to participate in orchestra concerts in the Gewandhaus, Opera, St. Thomas Church and on tours, as well as individual instruction by members of the Gewandhaus-Roche ester and chamber music classes at the HMT Leipzig. In this way, the academic receives two independent offers in terms of Content, time and organization, to develop further in the Music City of Leipzig at the highest artistic level. In addition to the performances with the Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Akademists regularly perform chamber music concerts in the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig, the HMT Leipzig and the Mendelssohn-Haus as part of their studies of chamber music.
Many graduates of the "Mendelssohn orchestral Academy" have earned a Position in the Gewandhaus orchestra. Other former academics were able to acquire Tutti and solo positions both at home and abroad.
