About

He was born in 1947 in Montevarchi, Italy. He studied architecture at the University of Florence.

Having designed his first stage projects for the University theater group, he then went on to study next to Emmanuele Luzzati at the theatrical scheme Gruppo della Rocca. The focus of his creations lies on molding the stage space by the use of objects, plastic components and experimentations in the lightings. Moreover, the colors and style of his costumes are, generally, an extension of the conceptual space of the scene. Since 1971, he has designed more than a hundred sets for classical and modern theater plays and opera works, as well as costumes for a wide variety of productions. His first set designs for the opera were in 1982 at the Municipal Theater of Bologna for the Damnation of Faust [Le damnation de Faust]. For this production, he was awarded with the Quadrienalle prize for scenic design (Prague, 1983). This was followed by a large number of collaborations, mainly with Italian and international theaters: La Skala Milan, Τeatro La Fenice di Venezia, San Carlo Theater Naples, Opera di Firenze/Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Opéra Bastille Paris, Verona Arena di Verona, Opernhaus Zürich, Metropolitan Opera of New York, Teatro de la Maestranza de Sevilla, Teatro Carlo Felice Genova, Finnish National Opera, Kansallisooppera Helsinki, Teatro Massimo Vincenzo Bellini di Catania, Teatro Regio di Torino, Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía, Valencia, Teatro Massimo, Palermo, Göteborgsoperan, Teatro dell’ Opera di Roma, etc. He has collaborated with directors such as Τ. Cobelli, Τ. Lievi, Β. Herzog, Κ. Kraus, L. Mariani και F. Tietsi. He was repeatedly honored in Italy with the Ubu theatrical awards (1994, 1997, 1998, 2002), Samaritani (2000), ETI-Gli Olimpici del Teatro (2003, 2004) and the National Association of Theater Critics Awards (2008). He worked with the GNO during the 2013/14 season, designing sets for the production of Macbeth, presented at The Athens Concert Hall.
