About
Martin Tingvall was born in the province of Schonen, in southern Sweden, in 1974. After attending a music high school he initially studied jazz piano, composition and improvisation at ‘Skurups Folkhögskola’, then at the Malmö Academy of Music. He also found time for an overseas semester in the Netherlands, at the Groningen conservatoire.
In 1999 Martin Tingvall completed his degree with a diploma concert at the Malmö Academy. That same year he moved to Hamburg where he has collaborated with many well-known artists from very different musical genres, such as Inga Rumpf, Orange Blue and Udo Lindenberg. He has also been on stage as a special guest alongside Till Brönner, Chris Barber, Pete York, Kurt Elling and Klaus Doldinger.
As a composer he was responsible for pieces for the ‘Vier Pianisten’ (Four Pianists) – four pianists from different genres, namely Joja Wendt, Sebastian Knauer, Axel Zwingenberger and Martin Tingvall himself on two grand pianos – a Christmas song for Rolf Zuckowsky, a rap song for the French superstar Orelsan and the musical ‘Was ihr wollt’ after William Shakespeare (Twelfth Night), commissioned by the Staatstheater Kiel, and a collaboration with SWR Bigband.
Martin Tingvall is also a songwriter and film music composer. He has composed the music for several television productions, including a number of episodes of the TV crime series Tatort.
In 2003 Martin Tingvall, along with the percussionist Jürgen Spiegel and the bassist Omar Rodriguez Calvo, founded the Tingvall Tiro. In 2012 the first of now two celebrated piano solo albums was released.
Martin Tingvall, a lyrical aesthete among jazz pianists, has composed all of the works for the Tingvall Trio, with which he has won three ECHO Jazz prizes, five Jazz Awards in Gold, one IMPALA Award and the Hamburg music prize HANS for the best production of the year 2011. With his two solo albums to date, ‘En Ny Dag’ and ‘Distance’, he has shown a completely different side to his creativity and that too has earned him a Jazz Award in Gold.
