After her successful American debut as Aglaonice in Philip Glass’ Orphée at the Virginia Opera in 2011, young Polish mezzo-soprano Marta Wryk came to the attention of European audiences and the press when she stepped in the role of Smeton in Anna Bolena at Oper Köln. Critics praised her for having “the most promising voice with spectacular high notes” (ResMusica) and for her “remarkable Italianitá” (Der nueu Merker).
While still a member of the Oper Köln Opera Studio, she was featured in several leading roles, including Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro, Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel, Oberto in Alcina and Gianetta in L’elisir d’Amore . She then joined the ensemble of Oper Köln and added to her reportoire the roles of Mercédès in Carmen, Second Lady in The Magic Flute and Laura in Tschaikovsky’s Jolantha. For her guest appearance in the demanding role of Ascanio in Berlioz’s Benvenuto Cellini at Oper Bonn in November 2015, she received great critical acclaim, being called “the astonishment of the evening” (Der Neue Merker) and “a singer at a start of a remarkable career” (Kölner Stadtanzeiger). Other highlights of that season included guest appearance as Suzuki in Madame Butterfly with Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden and Dorabella in Cosi fan tutte at Krakow Philharmonic Hall. In season 2016-2017 she returned to Staatstheater Wiesbaden for one of her favorite roles- Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro as well as to sing Wellgunde in Das Rheingold and Götterdämmerung and Siegrune in Die Walküre. She also appeared as Alcina in Francesca Caccini’s La liberazione di Ruggiero dall’isola di Alcina during Internationale Maifestspiele in Wiesbaden and as Dorabella in Cosi fan tutte during the Bach Festival in Świdnica in Poland.
She started the 2017/2018 season with a very successful appearance at the Chopin w Barwach Jesieni International Festival in Antonin in Poland, where she was named by the critics the discovery of the festival. She then returned to Kölner Oper to make a role debut as Maddalena in Rigoletto and as Javotte in Manon and made a house debut in Wuppertal as Hänsel in the new production of Hänsel und Gretel conducted by Julia Jones. At the Hessischen Staatstheater Wiesbaden she performed the roles of Wellgunde in Götterdämmerung and Gianetta in L’elisir d’amore In summer 2018 she returned to Bach Festival in Świdnica to sing the Israelit Man in Judas Maccabaeus with Capella Cracoviensis.
In the 2018/2019 season she will make her French debut at Sinfonia Festival in Perigueux performing Dorabella in Cosi fan tutte with the orchestra Les Ambassadeurs. She will then sing the part of Suzuki in Madama Butterfly at the Theater Münster and return to Oper Wuppertal for the revival of Hänsel und Gretel. At the Philharmonie Luxembourg she will perform the part of Silvia in the staged version of Stravinski’s Pulcinella. She will then join Oper Köln to perform Amélie in the new production of La Grand Duchesse du Gerolstein. She will finish the season performing in a concert gala in Warsaw’s Polski Theater during the 29th Mozart’s Festival.
Highlights of her 2019/2020 engagements include Krystna in a new production of Die Passagierin at Saarbrücken Oper and concerts at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and at the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra Concert Hall in Katowice.
An enthusiast of chamber music and Lied Marta Wryk made her debut at Cologne Philharmonic Hall in 2014 performing songs of Shostakovich and Villa Lobos. She then appeared in a concert at Krzysztof Penderecki International Music Centre in Lusławice. She was also invited by two contemporary music ensembles: Notabu-Ensemble and Spectra Ensemble to perform Luciano Berio’s Recital for Cathy at prestigious Düsseldorf Tonhalle and Ghent Muziekcentrum in Belgium. In summer of 2015, she was selected to sing in the Stipendiantenkonzert at Großen Haus der Stadthalle Bayreuth during the Bayreuth Festival. She also appeared in Kammermusik für Köln concert series at Santa Klara Keller in Köln. While residing in the USA she she performed at Symphony Space in New York with pianist Anne-Marie McDermott and in Kiva Auditorium in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with the pianist Kevin Kenner and the cellist William De Rosa. She has also performed at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory at the invitation of Dr James Watson, the Nobel Prize laureate. Other important concert appearances include the Caramoor Music Festival, the Chopin Foundation of the United States and the Kosciuszko Foundation in New York.
Mrs Wryk previous operatic credits overseas include L’Enfant in L’Enfant et Les Sortilièges in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and Elisabeth Proctor in The Crucible with Chautauqua Institution. She also covered the roles of Mother and the Witch in Hänsel and Gretel and Katisha in The Mikado at Virginia Opera as well as the title role in Carmen at Lyric Opera Virginia.
While still a student at Manhattan School of Music Marta Wryk won the first prize at the International Voice Competition in Gorizia, Italy, 3rd prize at the Marcella Sembrich Competition in New York and an encouragement prize from the Career Bridges Competiton in New York. In July 2014 she was named a semi-finalist of the 33rd International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition.
She received scholarship awards from Manhattan School of Music and Leszek and Jolanta Czarnecki’s Foundation. She took part in master classes of Tom Krause, Helena Łazarska, Helen Donath, Diana Soviero, Stephanie Blythe, Elly Ameling, Roger Vignoles and Helmut Deutsch. A degree holder from the F.Chopin University of Music in Warsaw and Manhattan School of Music in New Yorkm she also participated in Young Artists Programs at Virginia Opera, Lyric Opera Virginia, Bel Canto at Caramoor, Chautauqua Institution and The Schubert Institute.
Mrs Wryk has been also known in Poland as an author and poet. Her poems, prose and essays about art has been published in major Polish magazines.
