“Markus Brück is one of the most high-profile principals of the Deutsche Oper Berlin.”
This is the evaluation of the newspaper “Berliner Morgenpost” on the German baritone, who has been a member of that company since 2001 and who received in 2011 the honorary title of Kammersänger of the Deutsche Oper Berlin.
He has been very successful at the Deutsche Oper as e.g. Nelusco/”Vasco da Gama”, Chorèbe/”Les Troyens”, Conte Almaviva/”Le nozze di Figaro”, Valentin/”Faust”, Posa/”Don Carlo”, Renato/”Un ballo in maschera”, ‘Amonasro’/”Aida”, Marcello/“La Bohème“, Germont/“La Traviata“, with the title role in „Rigoletto“, as Wolfram/“Tannhäuser“, Balstrode/“Peter Grimes“, Leander/”The Love for Three Oranges”, Wotan/“Das Rheingold“ (Sir Simon Rattle), Beckmesser/“Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg“, Musiklehrer/”Ariadne auf Naxos, Faninal/“Der Rosenkavalier“, Peter/”Hänsel und Gretel”, Fritz/“Die tote Stadt“, Maurice/“Marie Victoire“, Egisto/“Cassandra“ and Michonnet/„Adriana Lecouvreur“.
Markus Brück has been rapidly gaining international recognition as a top interpreter of German, French and Italian roles and presents his large repertoire on all important stages.
Recent highlights were eg. his highly acclaimed debuts at the Metropolitan Opera as Faninal/”Der Rosenkavalier” as well as at the Opera House Zurich as “Macbeth”/titlerole.
Previous guest engagements included several productions at Bregenz Festival Papageno/”The magic flute”, Der Kaiser/“Le Rossignol”, Der Pilot/“L’Hirondelle inattendu” and “Der Schauspieldirektor” – the farewell performance of Bregenz Festival director David Pountney, his outstanding portrayal of the title character in “Rigoletto” at the Bavarian State Opera Munich, “Saul”/titelrole at the Glyndebourne Festival, Wolfram/”Tannhäuser” in Santiago de Chile, Germont/”La Traviata” at Mauritius, his highly acclaimed US-debut at Seattle Opera in the RING cycle of Stephen Wadsworth (Asher Fisch) with Donner/”Das Rheingold” and Gunther/”Götterdämmerung”, Orest/”Elektra” at the Hamburgische Staatsoper as well as at the Opéra de Paris, Bastille, Gunther/”Götterdämmerung”. He sang at the New National Opera in Tokyo (Falke), at the Dresden Semper Opera Wolfram, at the Theater Basel (Heerrufer/”Lohengrin”) at the Berlin Staatsoper unter den Linden Berlin (Heerrufer), at the Staatstheater Stuttgart as well as at the Nationalopera Helsinki (Conte Almaviva), at Liceu Barcelona and at La Scala di Milano (Fernando/”Fidelio”). He has also performed in the opera houses of Frankfurt, Bayreuth, Istanbul and Seoul. He garnered particular attention and acclaim for his portrayal of Paul Niemand in the world premier of Jörn Arnecke's “Unter Eis”at the Ruhrtriennale in Bochum.
With a strong commitment to oratorio and song, Mr. Brück is a frequent performer on the international concert platform. He sang Strawinskys “Requiem canticles” and Mahler‘s “Das klagende Lied” with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (Vladimir Jurowski). He was the soloist in Brahms’ “Ein Deutsches Requiem” with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (Donald Runnicles) in Glasgow and Edinburgh as well as at Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (Zubin Mehta) and at La Palau des les Arts in Valencia (Omer Meir Wellber). He sang a gala-concert at the Konzerthaus Berlin (Ivan Fischer), sang Beethoven IX with Radio Sinfonie Orchestra Dublin as well as with the Orchestre Pilharmonique de Nice (Philippe Arlaud) and with the RSB (Marek Janowski), which has been a close relationship since years. He is a regular guest at RSB not only with concerts but also with opera repertoire (Herrufer; Gunther). He has also been featured with the Hamburg Philharmonic (“Deutsche Sinfonie”/Eisler); Sebastian Weigle), at the KlangbogenFestival Vienna and with Brittens “War Requiem” at Iceland Symhony Orchestra in Reykjavic (Vladimir Ashkenazy) as well as at the Canterbury Festival and in Seoul with “Carmina Burana” (Ives Abel).
Future projects include his return to the Metropolitan Opera as well as to the Opera Zurich, a new production of “Falstaff”/’Ford’ at the Hamburgische Staatsoper and his his debut at the de Nationale Opera Amsterdam. New roles will be e.g. Carlo di Vargas/”La forza del destino”, Pizarro/”Fidelio”, Hans Sachs/”Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg”.
The artist's discography includes: CD-recordings of Wagner's “Lohengrin”, Magret Wolf’s “Kirisk” and Britten’s “War Requiem” as well as DVDs of Nielsen's “Maskerade” live from the Bregenz Festival, and Franchetti's “Germania” live from the Deutsche Oper.
Markus Brück studied voice at the Musikhochschule Mannheim/Heidelberg and the Musikhochschule Cologne with Prof. Dr. Alejandro Ramirez and Kammersänger Prof. Kurt Moll. After beginning his career at the Theatre of Hagen, he became a member of the ensemble in Kaiserslautern and later at the Theatre of Wiesbaden. Since the season 2013/14 he has been professor at the University of Arts in Berlin.
