The Dutch soprano Marijje van Stralen is successful in an unprecedented broad repertoire: from the compelling operas of Lully and Purcell to new work by leading composers such as Jonathan Dove, Louis Andriessen, Richard Rijnvos and Philippe Boesmans. In the ZaterdagMatinee, Marijje van Stralen was a soloist in the world premiere of Legende by Peter-Jan Wagemans for Jaap van Zweden and for Frans Bruggen in the opera Les Indes Galantes, by Rameau. She sang in the opera Reigen van Boesmans with various performances in the Netherlands and Paris. Marijje sang in the opera After Life by Michel van der Aa (Melbourne festival) Marijje was also heard in the title role of Mandolino by Ron Ford with the ensemble of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, with the Nedpho in the role of Frasquita (Carmen) conducted by Kreizberg and with the BBC Ulster Orchestra in Dances by Louis Andriessen. In the Robeco summer concerts in the operas of Mozart, Bastien und Bastienne (Bastienne) and Der Schauspieldirektor (M.Silberklang), with the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Gerard Korsten and the Gelders Orchestra conducted by Jan -willem de Vriend.The composer Richard Rijnvos won the Mattijs Vermeulen Prize for Die Kammersangerin in which she played the eponymous role at the Holland Festival.
 

Opera Marijje van Stralen sang in various opera houses in roles such as Pamina in Die Zauberflote (Ernst Theo Richter production) (Mozart) Adele in Die Fledermaus (Johann Strauss), Lucia in The Rape or Lucretia (Britten), various Mozart roles including Pamina and Blondchen (in Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Bastienne in Bastien und Bastienne, Mme. Silber sound in Der Schauspieldirektor, Belinda in Dido and Aeneas (Purcell), Mädchen in Der Kaiser von Atlantis (Victor Ullman), Princess in L’Enfant et les Sortilèges (Ravel), Silvie in Gounod's La Colombe, Polly in Down in the

Valley (Kurt Weill), Ling in The Monster with the two Backs (by David Dramm and Hafid Bouazza),. She also sang the role of Flora in Tosca and was heard in A Midsummernightsdream (British), Bizet's Carmen (Frasquita), Puccini's Tosca (Shepherd), Maurice Ravel's L'Enfant et les Sortilèges (Princess), Johann Strauss' Die Fledermaus (Adele), Britten's The Rape of Lucretia (Lucia) and Martijn Padding and Friso Haverkamp's Tattooed tongues (world premiere). Reclining Woman (Astrid Kruisselbrink) and Riders to the Sea (Vaughan Williams), Arthur Honegger's Les Aventures du Roi Pausole, Spaces in between Benedict Weisser and Phaëton by J.B. Lully. She sang in King Arthur and Queen Mary at Baroque Opera Amsterdam. She sang the role of Niece in Peter Grimes (Britten) at De Nederlandse Reisopera and the role of Saskia in the opera Writing to Vermeer by Louis Andriessen at the NJO conducted by Reinbert de Leeuw and participated in this production of Dutch National Opera and Ballet in Amsterdam and Lincoln Center New York.

Recordings Under the direction of Jed Wentz, Marijje van Stralen can be heard on CD as Sifare in the Mozart opera Mitridate. O.l.v. Ed Spanjaard as a milkmaid in Les aventures du Roi Pausole (Opera Trionfo). In the CD Growing up in Opera (various arias).

Conductors and orchestras Marijje van Stralen has worked with conductors such as Jaap van Zweden, Richard Bradshaw, Roy Goodman, Reinbert de Leeuw, Kenneth Montgomery, Ed Spanjaard, Yakov Kreizberg, Joel levi, Arie van Beek and Jan Willem de Vriend and with orchestras such as the BBC Ulster Orchestra, the Radio Chamber Orchestra, the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, the Brabant Orchestra, the Gelders Orkest, Limburgs Symfonie Orkest, Noord Nederlands Orkest (Die Fledermaus), Flemish Radio Orchestra, Orkest van de Oosten, Orchester de Picardie and Orchester Mirai Tokyo (Bunka Kaikan).

Ensembles Robin de Raaf wrote De Vlucht van de Magier for her ensemble for which he won the Gaudeamus composition prize. Louis Andriessen wrote The New Maths for her ensemble ELECTRA (until 2005) on behalf of the BBC. Marijje was a guest at Het Nieuw Ensemble, Nederlands Blazers Ensemble, Ensemble Sospeso New York, the Combattimento Consort Amsterdam, the NJO, NSO, Insomnio , Opera Trionfo, Matangi Quartet, Cello8tet Amsterdam, Asko-Schoenberg ensemble, Ives ensemble, Monword consort and Amsterdam Sinfonietta. With Edwin Rutten and Reinhild Mees she sang in Het Zingende Hart by Igor Strawinsky. Marijje could be heard with RCO camerata in Vienna and at festivals in France (Saint-Yriex, Cluny, Noyers sur Serein).

Various festivals Marijje van Stralen performed in various large venues and at leading festivals including the Barbican and South Bank Center (London), the Pontino Festival (Italy), Berliner Festwochen (Musikfabrik), Agora Festival (Paris), the Sonic Evolutions Festival in New York (Lincoln Center), the Holland Festival, Cordoba Festival, Robeco Summer Concerts in Amsterdam, but also at the French festival Art Lyrique et Musique Ancienne, Theater L'Athenee Paris (Purcell's King Arthur and Queen Mary) Baroque Opera Amsterdam With the Combattimento Consort she was to be heard at the Bach Festival Amsterdam, the Cello Bienale Amsterdam, The Grachtenfestival (various operas including Pig and Greed by Jonathan Dove, Riders to the sea by Vaughan Williams), and the Carmel Bach Festival in San Francisco. Marijje sang in the Robeco summer concerts, various chamber music series in the small hall and in the triple A series, on the 80th birthday of Sofia Goebaidulina with the Asko-Schoenberg ensemble conducted by Reinbert de Leeuw.

 

Study Marijje studied at the Conservatory of Amsterdam with Margreet Honig and the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, William Riley, New York. She was selected for the Britten-Pears School of Advanced Musical Studies in Aldeborough. She was a member of the ensemble of the International Opera Studio Netherlands, won the audience prize and was a finalist at the Christina Deutekom competition.

ARTISTIC LEADER During her studies, Marijje and colleagues formed the Amsterdam Quintet. The quintet was a guest at De Suite Muziekweek, among others. The quintet won first prize at the Internationale Wettbewerb fur junge Kultur in Dusseldorf. The composer Robin de Raaff won the Gaudeamus prize for his composition for the quintet. When soprano Barbara Hannigan left Electra, Marijje was her successor. Louis Andriessen and Michel van der Aa wrote The new Math (s) for the ensemble, a composition that was performed in London, New York and Paris, among others. Marijje is an advisor for the Performing Arts Fund, member of the program council of the Karavaan festival. Marijje was indirectly involved with the Maurice Amado Foundation. Marijje was, among other things, initiator of the opera Riders to the Sea (directed by Timothy Nelson) for the Grachtenfestival, by Splendor Kids (with Aisling Casey and Iris Oltheten) and the Splendor Salon (with Isabel Schröder among others) Dutch Music Days). Commissioned by the International Kamr Music Festival Delft (Liza Ferschtman), Marijje developed in collaboration with actor Ton Meijer various performances: The Ark of Noah, Robinson Crusoe, Be Mozart, The Thread of Calder, Aadje Piraatje. For the festival, Marijje also developed the participation show Willem, the opera, an opera about the life of Willem van Oranje and freedom. Michael Gieler asked her performances for his International Bach Festival Canarias to be developed; Be Bach and Be Vivaldi. These performances with actor Ton Meijer were heard at the Wonderfeel, Oranjewoud, Schiermonnikoog International Chamber Music Festival, IKFDelft, Zoom festival, Karavaan and halls such as Tivoli-Vredenburg, De Doelen, Muziekcentrum Eindhoven and Concertgebouw Amsterdam. The NNO asked her to join the ensemble for Berio, Sinfonia with Stefan Asbury. Is M. at the Hogeschool Utrecht, Marijje developed the CD Growing up in opera and realized the performance of the opera Le Devin du Village by Rousseau (ao at the Grachtenfestival) .Marijje and her foundation produced the opera Mr Finney the opera i.s.m. Asko-Schoenberg ensemble and the Koninklijke Schouwburg Den Haag.Marijje was the initiator and developed i.s.m. Agora Foundation and Dutch National Opera and Ballet Opera on the Zaan; an opera year for all pupils, teachers, staff and parents of 25 schools for excellent education in the Zaanstreek. Commissioned by the Klein Amsterdam Marijje primary school, a school song for the opening of the new school. In preparation, the teaching team visited NO & B. Commissioned by Barokopera Amsterdam and i.s.m. NO&B, the Zaantheater and Zaans Museum (Tsaar-Peterhuisje), Marijje was responsible for the educational / participation interpretation of the Tsaar-Peter-Festival in the context of the opera De Ontmaskering by Peter the Great.

Marijje van Stralen is the mother of 3 children, married to the pianist Jeroen Bal and lives in the center of Amsterdam.
