About

British actor and choreographer Linda Dobell (1953–2009) made her Royal Opera debut in 1993 as movement director for Die Zauberflöte, directed by Martin Duncan, and returned as choreographer for Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, directed by Richard Jones, and as movement director for Eugene Onegin, directed by Steven Pimlott.

Dobell studied at the Arts Educational School London and began her career while still in her teens, performing in the original Rocky Horror Show. As a dancer and actor she worked for companies including Theatre Royal Stratford East, the National Theatre, Young Vic (including in Jones’s production of The Good Soul of Szechuan, for which she was also movement director), in the West End (including in Jones’s Holy Mothers) and Royal Court. Her many choreographer credits with Jones included Lulu and From Morning to Midnight (English National Opera), Wozzeck (Welsh National Opera and Komische Oper Berlin), Hänsel und Gretel (Welsh National Opera, Metropolitan Opera, New York, and Bavarian State Opera), The Queen of Spades (Welsh National Opera, Norwegian National Opera and La Monnaie, Brussels), Macbeth and Falstaff (Glyndebourne), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Royal Shakespeare Company) and Tales from the Vienna Woods (National Theatre).

Dobell’s other choreographer credits included Così fan tuttePeter Grimes and The Magic Flute (Scottish Opera), Alice in Wonderland (Royal Shakespeare Company), The Miser (National Theatre) and The Lower Depths and Mincemeat (Cardboard Citizens).
