The Leipzig vocal ensemble is a vocal ensemble, which was founded in 1976 under the name of Leipzig vocal circle by Georg Christoph Biller and other former Thomans.
The Leipzig vocal ensemble has about 45 permanent members from different professional backgrounds and with different musical background. The choir's particular purpose is to perform rarely heard – also contemporary-spiritual choral music. Of course, the care of Johann Sebastian Bach's choral works is also part of the extensive Repertoire. The Leipzig vocal ensemble has been involved for many years in the Motet and cantata program of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig, so that the choir could hear and continue a comprehensive number of Bach cantatas at the composer's place of work. Bach's Kantatenwerk, as well as its passions and the Christmas Oratorio, is a long-time artistic collaboration between the choir and the Leipzig Baroque Orchestra.
The Leipzig vocal ensemble participated in a few radio and television productions, and choral symphonic works, in the Leipzig Gewandhaus, together with the thomaner choir, the Gewandhaus choir and the Leipzig Gewandhaus orchestra.
The Leipzig vocal ensemble has been committed in recent years at the Handel Festival, The Bach Festival Leipzig and the MDR Musiksommer. In 2009 and 2010, the commemorative concert to the anniversary of J. S. Bach's death, with the participation of the Leipzig vocal ensemble, was broadcast live from the Thomaskirche in Leipzig throughout Europe at 14 radio stations in various countries.
