American tenor Lee Steiner is a native of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, based in New York City. He is a member of the extra chorus at the Metropolitan Opera, appearing in the 2017-2018 productions of Puccini's Turandot, Wagner's Parsifal, Verdi's Requiem, and Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana. This fall, he will return to Salt Marsh Opera as Don Ottavio in Mozart's Don Giovanni. He has been a member of the young artist programs at Des Moines Metro Opera, Opera North, and Opera Santa Barbara, and was a winner of the Pasadena Opera Guild's Young Artist Award in 2016. He studied at the University of Illinois and Susquehanna University with Jerold Siena and David Steinau and currently resides in New York City.

Mr. Steiner will join the Metropolitan Opera Chorus for productions of Verdi's Aida, Wagner's Götterdämmerung, Saint-Saëns's Samson et Dalila, and Boito's Mefistofele during the 2018/2019 season. In July he will perform excerpts from Bernstein's West Side Story as Tony with the Newport Music Festival.

In 2017, he performed with the Metropolitan Opera Chorus in productions of Puccini's Turandot, Wagner's Parsifal, Verdi's Requiem, and Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana. He returned to Salt Marsh Opera in the fall to make his role debut as DON OTTAVIO in Mozart's Don Giovanni.

In 2016, he returned to Des Moines Metro Opera as an apprentice artist for the company's 44th festival season, covering OLDER GALILEO in Glass's Galileo Galilei. He made his Opera Santa Barbara debut as GHERARDO in Puccini's Gianni Schicchi, as well as serving as a cover for RINUCCIO. Additionally, he covered the role of NEMORINO in Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore. While in California, he was one of four Pasadena Opera Guild Young Artist Award Winners for the 2016 season.

In 2015, Mr. Steiner made his company debut as HARRY in Puccini's La fanciulla del West. He began the 2015 season touring Iowa as RAMIRO and ERNESTO in Opera Iowa's productions of Rossini's La Cenerentola and Davies's Billy Goats Gruff, respectively. In May he revisited the role of TAMINO in Salt Marsh Opera's production of Mozart's Die Zauberflöte.

In 2014, Mr. Steiner performed as an extra chorister in the Metropolitan Opera's production of Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. The summer of 2014 saw him debut as SAM KAPLAN in Weill's Street Scene and GIUSEPPE in Verdi's La Traviata. A tour of New Hampshire and Vermont followed this engagement, during which he reprised the role of Sam Kaplan.

​Mr. Steiner received a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. While doing his graduate work from 2009 - 2013, he appeared in numerous productions with the Illinois Opera Theater, including TAMINO in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, ARCADIO in Catán's Florencia en el Amazonas, ORPHEUS in Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld, MACHEATH in Weill's The Threepenny Opera, and PANE in Cavalli's La Calisto.

Mr. Steiner has studied with Jerold Siena and David Steinau.
