Hailed as having a “massive, sinfully rich voice” (New York Observer), Greek mezzo-soprano Karolina Pilou is quickly establishing her self as an exciting young dramatic mezzo-soprano to look out for . She made her Metropolitan Opera debut in the 2016-17 season as Berta in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, conducted by Maurizio Benini. Previous engagements have included the roles of Azucena in Verdi’s Il Trovatore in London with the English Opera Singers, Zita in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi in Tel Aviv with the International Vocal Arts Institute, Older Womanin J.Dove’s Flight with the British Youth Opera, and Mistress Quickly in Verdi’s Falstaff with Mannes Opera and the Aspen Music Festival. Other recent performances include Morna in Malvina di Scozia with Vertical Player Repertory, and Marquise de Berkenfield in La Fille du Régiment with the Martina Arroyo Foundation.
As a soloist, she has performed as the mezzo-soprano soloist in LoftOpera’s Summer Sessions Verdi concert, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with the Empire State Sinfonia, Bach’s Weihnachts-Oratorium, Handel’s Messiah, and Vivaldi’s Gloria with the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, Verdi’s Requiem at the Hellenic Foundation of New York Gala, and Villa-Lobos' Magnificat-Alleluia with the Little Orchestra Society of New York.
She has been the recipient of several prizes and awards from the Gerda Lissner International Vocal Competition, the Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation Vocal Competition, the New York Lyric Opera Competition, the Olga Forrai Foundation, and the Career Bridges Foundation and she was selected as a semifinalist at the Dallas Opera Guild Competition.
Karolina was previously young artist at Des Moines Metro Opera, and a participant in Dolora Zajick’s Institute for Young Dramatic Voices and Martina Arroyo’s Prelude to Performance in New York. She is a graduate of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, with further studies at Mannes School of Music.
Upcoming engagements in the 2017-2018 season include an appearance as the Mezzo-soprano soloist in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony in a concert presented by Seton Hall University and Mid Atlantic Opera , at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall , titled “ Prayer for Peace ” and her return to The Metropolitan Opera for a second season (performing and covering in Thais and Parsifal ) .
