About

German designer Jürgen Rose is particularly known for his collaborations with choreographer John Cranko, including on Poème de l’extase and Onegin. Other designs include for Kenneth MacMillan’s Concerto and, for The Royal Opera, Un ballo in maschera, directed by Otto Schenk, and Die Zauberflöte, directed by August Everding.

Rose was born in Bernberg and studied acting and painting in Berlin. In 1961 he created his first designs for Cranko at Stuttgart Ballet, with As You Like It. His designs for Cranko’s Romeo and Juliet in 1962 won him renown; until 1970 he created designs for most of Cranko’s ballets, including Swan LakeThe FirebirdDaphnis et ChloëInitialen R.B.M.E. and Spuren. He has also designed regularly for John Neumeier (Swan LakeThe NutcrackerRomeo and JulietA Midsummer Night’s DreamThe Sleeping BeautyLa Dame aux caméliasPeer Gynt and Cinderella) and Celia Franca (The Nutcracker).

Rose’s extensive work in opera includes Salome for Vienna State Opera and La Scala, Milan, Don Giovanni for Munich State Opera and Deutsche Oper Berlin, Parsifal for Vienna State Opera, ArabellaEugene OneginDas Rhinegold and Die Walküre for Hamburg State Opera, Tannhäuser for the Bayreuth Festival and Wozzeck and Ariadne auf Naxos for the Salzburg Festival. Other work includes many theatre credits and designs for the 1963 film Das schwarz-weiss-rote Himmelbett.
