Jose Maria Condemi made his San Francisco Opera debut in 2005 with Così fan tutte. He has returned to direct productions of Carmen, Madama Butterfly, Faust, Tosca, Un Ballo in Maschera, the world premiere of Nolan Gasser’s The Secret Garden, and, most recently, this past fall for the double-bill of Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci.
Other notable engagements include Ernani and Tristan und Isolde at Lyric Opera of Chicago, Aida at Houston Grand Opera, Luisa Miller at Canadian Opera Company, Orphée et Eurydice and La Bohème at Seattle Opera, Frida at Michigan Opera Theatre, Ainadamar and Don Giovanni at Cincinnati Opera, Tosca at Opéra de Montréal, A Streetcar Named Desire at Kentucky Opera, Carmen at Central City Opera and Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Florencia en el Amazonas at Florida Grand Opera and Opera Colorado, and Simon Boccanegra at the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires.
Condemi is the Carol Franc Buck Distinguished Chair at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He was also the Artistic Director of Opera Santa Barbara from 2010–2015 where he oversaw artistic planning and the Studio Artists Program. He was the first Adler Fellow in Stage Direction at the San Francisco Opera and a Fulbright Fellow. Upcoming directing engagements include new productions of Rigoletto at New Orleans Opera and Frida at Florida Grand Opera.
