José van Dam (born August 25, 1940) is a Belgian operatic bass-baritone known for his powerful voice, impeccable technique, and compelling stage presence. He has enjoyed a distinguished career spanning several decades, performing in the world’s most prestigious opera houses and concert halls.

Born Joseph van Damme in Brussels, Belgium, José van Dam showed early musical talent. He studied at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he won several prizes for his vocal achievements. His early training provided him with a solid foundation in both vocal technique and interpretation.Van Dam made his professional opera debut in Paris at the Opéra-Comique in 1961, performing in Les Troyens by Berlioz. His career quickly gained momentum, leading him to engagements in major opera houses, including La Scala (Milan), the Metropolitan Opera (New York), the Royal Opera House (London), and the Vienna State Opera. One of his most acclaimed roles was Golaud in Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande, which he performed numerous times throughout his career. He also gained international recognition for his portrayal of Don Giovanni, Amfortas (Parsifal), Jochanaan (Salome), and Hans Sachs (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg). In 1988, van Dam played the lead role in the film Le Maître de Musique (The Music Teacher), a performance that further cemented his reputation as one of the great opera singers of his generation.
