Jens Lorenz studied conducting at the Hochschule für Musik "Franz Liszt" in Weimar and took part in several master classes, including with Helmuth Rilling and Kurt Masur. He is University music director of the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg, heads the University Choir Halle "Johann Friedrich Reichardt" and is a lecturer for the choir and orchestra direction at the Institute of music.
With the University choir he has numerous oratorios and large works for choir and orchestra, such as Alexander's feast, the
Dettinger Te Deum, and the Brockes Passion by G. F. Handel and the Magnificat, the St. John Passion and the Christmas oratorio by J. S. Bach-Lukas Passion 1728, and the cantata "Bethlehem The shepherds at the crib" by G. P. Telemann, the coronation mass, the Requiem and Vesperea solennes de Confessore by W. A. Mozart, Requiem by G. Fauré, the mater by A. Dvorak, as well as the Elias by Mendelssohn-Bartholdy Stabat listed. He has worked with outstanding orchestras such as the anhaltische Philharmonie Dessau, the Handel festival orchestra Halle, the Prague Baroque orchestra, La folia de Lille (France), the Baroque Consort of the Hochschule für music in Bremen and the Philharmonie Bad Reichenhall, as well as renowned soloists.
Within his artistic work, particular attention is paid to the care and performance of unknown works by central German composers. The engagement with the Zerbster Hofkapellmeister Johann Friedrich Fasch is of particular importance here. In recent years, many unknown compositions, e.g. by J. F. Fasch, G. P. Telemann, have been able to,
P. H. Erlebach, F. W. Zachow and J. F. Reichardt can be heard again.
The A cappella Choir Music also takes an important place in his work. In recent years, nine CDs have been recorded, concerts by mdr figaro, DeutschlandRadio Kultur and the ORF, as well as several awards at international choral competitions: the award as best mixed choir, the special prize for the best Interpretation of the compulsory piece at the International Choral Competition Verona (Italy) in April 2007 and the overall victory at the International Choral Competition PRAGA CANTAT in He is often active in major music festivals and concert series such as the Handel festival of Halle, the international Fasch festival, the Telemann Sunday music Magdeburg, the Thuringian Liszt festival or Women in Jazz as a conductor.
In addition to his extensive concert activity, which led him through many European countries, he regularly appears as a Juror at competitions and as a lecturer at choral director courses (including in the Landes – Musikakademie Michaelstein). The city of Zerbst awarded him the Fasch Prize in 1995 and the Prime Minister of Saxony – Anhalt awarded him the Nobel Prize in honour in 2012.
